La Nueva Bakery

Aaaah, the corner of 47th and Market St...

where a new building has been constructed on the southwest corner...

across the street from Asia Cafe and Muang Lao Market...but also diagonal from another strip mall with a variety of businesses...

like the OTHER location of KD's Donuts (you will see that their sign is NOT vandalized to read as "D's Nuts" which is kind of sad and boring), the other location of Neveria Tocumbo and a Mexican bakery...

There used to be a Pho place there awhile back but it's something else now. Not sure if it's another restaurant. Anyhow, coming from the 805 and Market St, at this corner, hang an (illegal) left before you hit 47th or you can make a left at 47th and make another left into the lot.

I love the paintings of Neveria Tocumbo's windows! The Santa Claus is holding a paleta! The snowman is holding a raspado (or could it be a chamango?)!

A few doors away from KD's is La Nueva Bakery, a Mexican bakery.

They are not as big as Panchita's, but their selection was all right.

If you don't want pan dulce, you can also get a mollete (a bolillo that is cut open with a variety of savory fillings), tortas, or tamales. Everything sounded good but I had somewhere to go after this and I didn't want it to spoil. Plus, it would be an excuse for a future trip, heh heh. The wheels are turning.

I like the element of surprise whenever I visit these panaderias.   I especially like the ones that are well stocked like Gloria's. My obession with panaderias is a far cry from how I felt last year when I went to my first Mexican bakery and was a bit disappointed. Now that I've been to quite a few, I know which ones I like and which ones to avoid. Everyone has different tastes and I tend to stay away from the big concha type breads.

In the middle was a case filled with fresh baked bolillo rolls and rack filled with flaky turnovers, some with cheese and some with meat.

My four selections, which ended up being less than $4!!! Wut!

I got a turnover from the rack labeled ground beef (it ended up being cream cheese with jalapenos, but I found that out later!), one pink sugar topped wheat pan dulce (for TC), a pair of powdered sugar cookies with some sort of filling (Bert had that the next day) and a fluted paper cup of yellow cake with walnuts. The lady working here was really nice and offered to heat up my turnover for me.

Before I left, I picked up this tall soda bottle (Sidral brand soda, apple flavor, $2)...

The smell of the turnover was filling up my car...

The lady had packed it separately so it wouldn't mess up the other breads...

Mmmm, just look at that flaky golden top...

I really liked the texture of this pastry. It wasn't quite puff pastry, but it had layers of flakiness that I enjoyed. The filling was also quite tasty.

This beauty was enjoyed the next day for breakfast. There were nuts at the bottom of the cup and scattered on the topas well.

This was something I hadn't seen at other bakeries so it was worth it to try it at least once. Of the four items, I liked the savory one the best, followed by the nut bread.

There is no website but here are the reviews from you know where.

I plan to come back to try their ground beef turnover next time! Only one more week left and I'm home free (insert maniacal cackle here)!

Good photos of yummy pastries. You are lucky to have so many near you; I have to travel to Mexican Markets and still sometimes choose items I don't like- but I know the walnut cakes are always good.

Thank you Cathy. I am curious to explore the panaderias in the City Heights area...even though I may not know what i'm getting sometimes, usually it's pretty good!

I like that fluted walnut cake! I like how it sort of looks like a flower with the edges. Pretty!
