European Cake Gallery

So with my barely working Garmin (the batteries were weak but barely working), we were able to find this place, the European Cake Gallery...

on Voltaire Street in Point Loma. I hadn't been here in years. In fact, the last time I was here was back in 1994 when Bert and I were still engaged and trying out different wedding cake vendors! A few of our friends had utilized European Cake Gallery for their wedding cakes.

For the record, we ended up choosing a different vendor for our cake which was made by a sweet little old lady who lived in the College Area. Back in the early to mid 90's, it was popular to have white chocolate shavings on your cakes. This place was a purveyor of that style of cake at the time. It looked pretty but I suppose it's kind of dated now.

Anyhow..let's go in shall we?

The ECG is highly rated by Zagat...not that I even bother reading those guides.

The bakery was not really on the neat side, but boy did it smell so good in here!

See the older gentleman in the background?  I believe he was the owner.

On the walls are portraits of past wedding cakes. They also had photo albums on their counters for customers to look through. Those albums were old. We're talking late 80's and early 90's, judging from the fashion and hairstyles of the couples. I thought it was kind of sweet that couples would send pictures of them and their cake to the bakery.

They are known for their White Chocolate Raspberry Bavarian cake. One of my other friends ordered that flavor for his birthday cake many years ago.

TC wanted one of the palmiers...

I was hesitant on getting a cupcake or a slice of cake since we would still be doing errands. I didn't want it to melt or go bad in the car. In these case were lemon bars, cakes, brownies, and wedding cookies.

One of the cakes above had the white chocolate shavings on it! I didn't know they still made those!

We only got two items that day. If we were going straight home, we would have sampled something else, but we will have to make another trip up to try their cake slices. Below, TC's palmier and a fresh out of the oven cinnamon pullapart loaf ($7).

The gals working here were very nice and patient while I pondered what to get. I thought the bread would be a nice addition to the goodies table for Thanksgiving, which was the next day.

This smelled so good and that's saying a lot because I'm not really a fan of cinnamon!  I really liked the caramelized top and the stickiness of the bread.  We ended up slicing it to make it easier to serve since pulling it apart yielded uneven pieces.

With vacation coming up again, I will be sure to pay another visit with Bert and try a cake slice or two with some coffee.

For "Black Friday", we stayed home, as we normally do, and decorated our tree...which I realize I don't have a picture of (I'll have to update this later). It's not our tradition to go out among the hordes of crazed shoppers looking for deals at the malls. No way.

Instead, we ended up having a late lunch in North Park at a place that demanded a revisit...

You should try their Swiss Black Forest cake. That's our favorite. I recently ordered the white raspberry but had them add fresh strawberries as well - everyone seemed to like it.

But yeah, this place is super popular for weddings. They freeze their cakes (or that's what they tell me) so that it remains cold or something for the event?

hi faye - thanks for making the suggestion a while ago. i had forgotten about this place so i thought i'd go see it while i could! i will definitely try the swiss black forest cake. my husband would really like that.

freezing the cakes makes them hold up really well. also, if those white chocolate shavings are on the outside, they will not melt as quickly. ours didn't melt and we got married in the summer.
