On the northeast corner of Palomar and Third is this old fashioned looking burger joint...

We see it all the time whenever we're at Gunco Ramen across the street and have always wondered about it...
See the sign? The one behind Fred's? Yes, it's D's Nuts.

My sis has been here with her boys several times and thought it was pretty good. For her last day of school before the winter break, I took her to Fred's for a late lunch.

Inside it is en explosion of retro metal signs featuring vintage cars, food/candy brands and musical/tv/movie idols of the 50's & 60's.

They do not have a menu online. I actually thought their prices were kind of high. A combo for TC (quarter pound with fries and drink was more than $5. It's much cheaper and fresher tasting at In-n-Out. Hmmm, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

They also had these, in addition to burgers, wings, and breakfast items.

Here's a small section of the wall, covered with the signs.

Near the soda machine, more signs (food/drink related)...

Our lunch...TC's combo with fries, my Junior hamburger (cheese .30 extra) and onion rings.

TC's bacon cheeseburger.

I didn't to commit to a full size burger, so I got the junior size.

While TC liked her burger (she's a kid after all), I thought these were rather unremarkable. The meat patty tasted like the frozen kind. It was grilled, don't get me wrong, but the taste was just blah. The bun was cold as were the other ingredients. The patty itself was warm maybe on the edges but once I got to the middle, it was not warm at all, like it had been sitting out or something. I noticed that it took awhile for us to get our order, despite having only three other customers (besides us) in the eatery. WTH.
The onions rings were all right, with a crumbly and crisp batter. There were real onions inside (as there should be), not chopped up onions formed into rings.

TC's bacon...(they give you more at Charley's and it's cheaper too)

These to me, tasted like we could have made this in our backyard, but ours would have been better.

I know not to expect gourmet quality here but I wasn't impressed with what I had. A cold and sad burger.
Across the street from Fred's, behind Gunco Ramen is El Charco, a promising Mexico City style taco joint that opened late last year...

A few months ago, my co-workers and I (along with Kirk, on a separate occasion that same week) saw that they were "closed" for remodeling.

Peering in, it didn't look like any remodeling was taking place or had taken place

That was kind of a bummer because I really liked it at El Charco (so much that I went twice in one week).

Their website link is broken. Boo. But here are the mixed bag o'reviews from you guessed it. It's so funny. They range from "OMG, this is so great" to "This place sucks". Typical.
I might give Fred's another chance but not anytime in the near future. I'll have to drag Bert with me and get his opinion...

Fred's used to be much better in the past, but Jake and I have sadly seen Fred's go downhill over the last year or so. Which is very sad to us, since it used to be in our regular rotation. After the Fred's in El Cajon closed we gave up on it. The quality and service have gone down and it just doesn't taste like what it used to it. Very sad.
Hi Mary - Wow, that sux this place went downhill. In-n-Out kicks its ass backwards and forwards in price, quality, taste, and service.
