Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting up with good friend Cathy (of Mmm-yoso) in the hipstery part of North Park...
Our plan was to get our drinks here, at the Subterranean Coffee Boutique (that's a mouthful, ain't it), then walk on over for lunch at the nearby 30th St. Cafe, which we enjoyed during our first visit late last year.

Cool inked robot artwork on the walls...

Some of the desserts offered there...we would be going somewhere else for dessert that day.

And here are our beverages (buy one get one free) - My Pineapple iced tea and Cathy's Italian soda flavored with hazelnut I believe.

I LOVE this sign's fonts for the business next door:

As a riff on the word "Subterranean", there is Bob Dylan's iconic song, "Subterranean Homesick Blues". This isn't the actual video, but it IS playing in the background with the voiceover explaining the pop cultural significance.
The promotional film clip was considered the first "music video". Although I'm not a big Dylan fan, I do appreciate his influence in music.
Here is INXS's "version" of using cards with written words in their video for "Mediate", one of their hits from their 1987 album "Kick":
This song came out when I was starting college (fall of '87), back when MTV played REAL music videos instead of those awfully insipid "reality"-TV shows.OMG, I really dug Michael Hutchence back then. N and I saw them in concert in 1988 with Public Image Ltd. opening. Such a sad ending for Michael Hutchence...
This is a funkier remake of Dylan's song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers from their album, "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan", also released in 1987:
Oh yeah, man, Anthony Kiedis!!! He was another frontman that I thought was the epitome of cool. I liked him when he had super long hair and didn't have as many tattoos (late 80's).
The cards scene was also used to similar effect for this scene in "Love Actually" (one of my favorite scenes. Sniff, sniff...Tito, pass me some tissues!):
Wow, Keira Knightley was so young and fresh faced in this movie!
Previous visit to Subterranean Coffee Boutique with TC:

After getting our drinks, we walked up the block for what we thought would be lunch at 30th St. Cafe...

Really a nice place. Thanks for having that coupon! We got a Soda Stream for our birthdays and can make a similar beverage at home now- have the syrups...but would not have thought of using them with carbonated water.
hi cathy - i wished i took a photo of their LP wall - they had album covers displayed on thin shelves. i like that they have a turn table as part of their logo/design. the owner wasn't there that day. it's owned by a young husband/wife couple.
wow, cool gift to yourselves! i'm sure you can come up with a lot of neat soda flavor combinations.
