Return to Mien Trung and dessert at K Sandwiches

Yesterday TC and I met up with Paul (sans Darlene) for a quick dessert meetup at Da Shack for some Hawaiian style shave ice. I thought it would be efficient if we had lunch near the proposed site.

We parked in the K Sandwiches parking lot, which was hella crowded during the lunch hour.

It has been more than a year since we had lunch at Mien Trung. It's the building with the faded sign next to the sushi place. It's right across from Kearny High and just a few steps away from K Sandwiches. Did I mention that parking sucks there?

TC just had her braces tightened so she wanted some sort of soup.

I totally forgot that they don't make pho here! TC didn't want any of the other soups they had so she ended up getting bun with grilled bbq pork.  This was only the first page of their menu.

I like their prices here. Very affordable and filling.

This was the catering menu tacked on the wall near our table. Looks like they had more interesting items on this menu like Nem Nuong (too bad that's not on their regular menu) and the Vietnamese Asparagus Crab Soup.

Our drinks - coconut juice with meat for TC and my iced coffee with condensed milk (it was quite strong which I liked).

Our entrees:

TC's bun with pork (it looked like beef to me). They use A LOT of peanuts here. In fact, we saw huge plastic containers full of Hoody's brand peanuts on a shelf in the corner. Peanuts galore!

I'm a creature of habit, so I got the soup I had the last time, the Mi Quang (turmeric noodles with pork and shrimp). It comes with a side of shredded lettuce, a lime slice and bean sprouts.

I really like the wide noodles they use as well as the flavor of this soup.

They included broken bits of the big sesame cracker and put them in the soup. I don't remember if they did that before or if the cracker was served on the side.

The shrimp had the heads on, which I liked (that's where the flavor is!).

TC didn't want the fried shallots in her bun so she gave them to me. She put them in my shrimp head bowl, ha ha.

While having lunch at Mien Trung, I got a call from Paul saying that Da Shack was out of business, as in Kaput and Closed Forever! No worries, we would just meet at K...

It was pretty busy and I ended up sharking a table in front.

Below, my blueberry croissant (thanks Paul) and Paul's root beer Faygo.

TC passed on dessert and instead petted their cute dog, The Doctor (as in Doctor Who).

Awww...

Isn't he adorable?

Previous visit to Mien Trung:
June 2012 where we had Bun Bo Hue, Mi Quang and Hen Xuc Banh Trang

I hope I don't wait another year for our next visit. I'm interested in  trying their noodles with fried fish and the noodles with duck and bamboo shoots soon.  Gosh, there are so many places we want to try but so little time!

Turmeric is quickly becoming a 'new' popular flavoring (and I think antioxidant). I hadn't noticed those noodles as part of the soup on the menu (probably because I do my 'usual' order), even though there are only like 28 items on the whole menu. You don't eat the shrimp heads? Crunchy goodness! K Sandwich is so good-that blueberry croissant looks wonderful! Good dog Doc!

Hey CC - The Bun Mang Vit here is not that great.... you should check out Chinese Kitchen - Chi Tu Thanh Nha Hang for that. Funny, I was just at Mien Trung for my Bun Bo Hue and the Missus Banh Nam fix.

hi cathy - i think they use the turmeric for the coloring. the noodles in that particular soup I like because they are thick and wide. not the noodles they use for pho or bun.

as for the shrimp heads, i DO like them. that was the bowl AFTER I sucked out the juices, ha ha! I was so happy last year to see that they kept the shrimp heads on, altough they snipped off the end of the shrimp's "face".

kirk- thanks for the recommedation on the Bun Mang Vit. I've never had it before but I will be sure to try out Chinese Kitchen's version.
