Return to Crispy Fried Chicken

Yesterday we took TC and her friend Sherlock ice skating at the Joan Kroc Center...

where this lovely painted utility box is located (corner of University Ave and Salvation Army Way or Drive). Yours truly along with Bert and the two girls all enjoyed ourselves on the ice where we worked up an appetite...

A word to the wise, although this particular coupon can be found in the new Entertainment Values coupon booklet, they are no longer being honored (What?). Except for today. The Asian dude working at Crispy Fried Chicken kept looking at it and asked where we got it. He said he cancelled it but he would take the coupon today. He probably didn't like losing money from coupon users but he was gracious enough to still honor it yesterday.

I actually had ANOTHER coupon I printed from the internet and ended up not using since the guy made it a point to let us know he wasn't taking any more coupons. Gulp. I didn't want to push my luck. Plus, the coupon was only good for the chicken combo not the seafood (which it doesn't state on the coupon).

Love the "C" in the sign and how "and seafood" is in small letters like an afterthought.

We sat near the window where you could see the cooks frying up the chicken and fish and whatever else people ordered (French fries, onion rings, okra). The only non-fried things they have are the sides like corn, macaroni salad, and greens.  This is not a place to go to if you are being health conscious! You can see the fry cook's shirt with the logo!

Only three items are pictured since the two piece chicken combo was a double (both teens ordered the same thing, buy one get one which was $4.50 total).

They both wanted dark meat (you can choose dark, white, or mixed) and the same sides (mac 'n cheese and potato salad). Both girls enjoyed their juicy chicken pieces and the crispy skin.

Bert and I shared the two piece catfish combo with fried okra and potato wedges.

Ugh, you can see my dry fingers, but hey, take a look at that okra!

The fish portions were quite meaty and substantial. Bert really liked how moist the fish was. I liked the cornmeal batter too.

Since I said I would get the fried gizzards "the next time I was here", I made good on my word. This was a side of the fried gizzards and man, there was a lot in that little container!

I'd never seen styofoam boxes with holes in the corner before. It makes sense because you don't want your fried food to get soggy!

About the "gizzard", I didn't really grow up eating these but I had them from time to time when my dad would fry them up. Then I looked up what a gizzard was and yeah...let's say I probably won't eat these again soon.

The gizzard is an organ found in the digestive tract of certain animals. It small and has thick muscular walls and is used to grind up food. The gizzard itself is very thick and has a chewy feel.

Yeah, that's what it looks like (below):

I had to spit out several pieces because it was too "thick" and kind of rubbery and I couldn't bring myself to swallow it. I loved the fried batter, but the gizzard itself was too chewy for me. Bert tried a few pieces and so did the girls but they didn't really like it either.  Most of the order went untouched.

Our next stop would be up in the Kearny Mesa area for an icy cold treat!

Jake and I go here a lot. I always get the cornbread and I'd say 8 out of 10 times the cornbread is really good. My last visit it wasn't, but oh well. I always like getting the shrimp here plus I steal a piece of chicken from Jake. He likes getting the chicken nugget things they have, too. It's all white meat chicken, battered and fried. Yummy stuff!
