The site of a former Winchell's, Plaza Donuts is located on the corner of 16th and Highland. It's one of those places that you drive by all the time but never go to because you are on your way to and from somewhere...
This was one of those times when we finally stopped to check it out...
The donut place is next to one of those "flower barrel" businesses. I actually wanted to buy some donut holes for a going-away party that same evening.

Can you see part of the barrel?

It's pretty basic in here. As I said in a previous post about another donut shop, the prices are "non-hipster", aka "normal" or nothing above $1.50.

Here's a closer look at their board. They also serve ice cream here if you feel like having a dairy dessert while you're at it.

I thought the football decor was a bit random. They seem to be Chargers, Steelers, and Raiders (boo) fans.

Some of their selection:

Their apple fritters, some sort of filled bar and some ginormous donuts below!

These were the four we were going to walk away with - the apple fritter, a chocolate buttermilk bar, a Homer Simpson donut (well, that's what TC calls it), and a sliced chocolate glazed donut filled with whipped cream.

Before I closed the box, the lady put in another donut ("on the house"), a cinnamon roll because she wanted us to try it and also because it was our first time there. Well, now!

When she saw me taking snaps of the giant donuts, she took out the tray so I could get a better view.

I wish I had a ruler next to these to give you a sense of scale, but holy cow, these were HUGE! Like as big as a plate huge!

Damn, who buys these things?
Unfortunately they do not have anything blueberry except for muffins, which I'm not a fan of. Their selection is pretty basic with very friendly service. I never did get those donut holes since they were out. They only had cream puffs so we didn't bring anything to the party after all.
Who else went to Plaza Donuts?

Great looking donuts....County Fair Donuts! Such fun to stop and check places out, you never know what you'll find...
I could tell the donuts were giants since there's only two side by side and in your other photo there's four side by side! Crazy big! Apparently at the Donut Touch you can get a donut birthday cake (aka, really really big donut). I wonder if the really big ones still taste as good? Nice find though, it's always fun to try out little shops. Cathy's right - you never know what gem (or crap hole) you'll find!
hi cathy - i'm glad i stopped by after driving past it after all these years.
hi mary - i'm wondering if those giant donuts taste as good as they look. i bet those could be a birthday cake as well. just stick some candles in them.
re: checking out little shops and never knowing what you'll find...i've learned that from all your blogging adventures (you, cathy, darlene, kirk, dennis, etc).
ha ha, "craphole".
