Happy Thanksgiving 2012

From this...

to this!

I have to say that my dad outdid himself this year with the turkey...

Today was spent with my side of the family. What made today even more special was the recent arrival of my newest niece, the first one on my side. TC is no longer the youngest and also no longer the ONLY girl among five boys, or as my mom would say, "the only rose among the thorns", ha ha! My brother and his GF welcome a new baby girl early Tuesday morning. They arrived at the hospital at 4:55 am and the baby was born at 5:07! She's so cute and slept most of the afternoon. It had been so long since I held such a tiny baby!

Thanksgiving this year was mostly American food. My dad, a former Navy cook  made this delicious turkey that was enjoyed by all. He seasoned the bird's cavity with salt, pepper and lemongrass and stuffed it with brown rice and sliced sausage bits. The skin was perfectly crisp and the meat was tender and juicy. I'm not much for turkey meat but I went back for seconds this time!

The "traditional" sides included "dressing", mashed potatoes with gravy (the gravy was separate), and sliced cranberry jelly (my parents' choice). The turkey's co-star was a glazed ham which was also a big hit.

My dad's homemade turkey gravy...

Cranberry orange relish made by TC the day before.

One of the few non-traditonal dishes was this shrimp entree. My mom sauteed the jumbo shrimp with cornstarch and added straw mushrooms, green peas, and red pepper strips.  She hasn't made this in a long time and we were happy to see this recipe resurrected for Thanksgiving.

This is our new favorite brunch/lunch dish (or side), the Asparagus Gruyere Tart (this time made by me instead of TC). Shown before it was methodically sliced up by Bert.

The kitchen counter laden with today's lunch:

My dad slicing up the honey glazed ham. Our leftovers will be used for fried rice later this week. Breakfast!

The desserts table (which had an extra non-desserty Asparagus Gruyere tart): two pumpkin pies (made by TC), Filipino kutsinta with freshly grated coconut on the side, and mini pecan tarts.

Filipino style fruit salad - canned fruit with cream, cream cheese and macapuno strings, a favorite of the boys and TC. My mom buys extra cherries for this.

Well, that is what we enjoyed TWICE today. Lunch and dinner! Hope you all enjoyed the today with your family and/or loved ones.
