Canada 2012 - Day 4: In search of butter tarts

C and FarmerJohn were kind enough to let us borrow their mini van while we did errands on the island. TC and C's daughter played on this ginormous gravel pile back at the farm.

One of Canada's most beloved desserts is the butter tart. We thought we could find some ready-made version close by rather than driving all the way out to Mum's (a  thirty minute drive!).

This was the map near the gas station and convenience store in South Baymouth.

If we couldn't find any here, we'd try a few other spots recommended by C...

So, a gas station convenience store? Well, why not? This was the same place we went before to get post cards and candy...

I like looking at their processed meats, especially "Klik", a wanna-be "SPAM", or "Holiday - Luncheon Meat".

They had no homemade butter tarts. The guy working there said they ran out of their packaged butter tarts but suggested we try another place.  Before going there, we went to the post office to mail the post cards. I figured I had nothing to lose by asking the lady working there where I could get some good butter tarts.

"My house!" she declared proudly. She then added, "If I'd have known you wanted some, I would have brought some to sell you!"

Geez, I really wish she did have some...

I remember going to this place, Island Fish and Chips during our first visit in 2010. Like last time, it was also closed. It was recommended as the best place on the island for fish 'n chips.

Along that same stretch of shops (the post office is hidden behind these buildings) were some tourist shops selling souvenirs, fudge, pizza, and ice cream. It's located right across the place where cars wait to board the ferry to Tobermory.

Inside the Manitoulin Trading Post was a little cafe where we thought we'd ask about the butter tarts.

Besides pizza, subs, and meal enhancers (haha, I like that phrase) or sides, they do offer butter tarts but they were not homemade.

These were the flavors that they offered, the Grandmother brand, Pecan and Raisin butter tarts. Desperate to try it, we bought one of each...

The view from the cafe...no lines for the ferry yet.

Our last errand was to go back to Foodland in Mindemoya to get roast chicken and bread so we could have sandwiches for our trip to Ottawa.

It's not often you see a traffic sign like this:

We passed by several lakes on our way to the central part of the island. Lots of lakes on this island.

Okay, they're not homemade, but we bought two packages of the mini butter tarts, without nuts so we could have something to snack on during the long trip ahead.

Unfortunately there was no roast chicken available and the next one would be within an hour or so. We decided to kill some time and see if we could grab some lunch nearby...
