Our original plan was to go to the Pearl but I was PO'd because I'd misplaced the coupon (which of course I found later when we got home). Not to worry because I had Plan B in mind and it was a place that Bert and I enjoyed from past visits, 25 Forty Bistro.

Our favorite parking spot in a hidden area in Old Town was taken but we got lucky with other open spaces near Congress St. It also helped that we went super early (5:30 pm)...
It was nice having a rare "date night" with Bert. TC, on the other hand, was enjoying hanging out with the boy cousins (sister's kids), one of whom is a recently obsessed with cup stacking and solving the Rubik's Cube in less than 10 seconds. The boy has a special "competition" cube that he plays with everywhere! It's smaller than a regular cube, they parts move much smoother and he is able to solve it with ONE HAND!
Our menu for the evening...

We'd tried almost everything (meat based except the duck and lamb) before and wanted something we hadn't tried.
The coupon I had for this place (yes, of course, I had one!) specified that we needed to have to beverages. Below, Bert's Franscizkaner (I probably spelled that wrong and I can't read the fine print so fuck it), and my Lemon Drop made with soju.

We started off with the Kale Salad with candied walnuts, raisins, and a savory sesame/soy dressing.

We had this before and really liked it. I would never have thought of eating kale raw this way. I normally put my shredded kale in hearty soups.
Not the greatest photo, but this was Bert's Beef Bourguignon over mashed potatoes and served with thinly sliced carrots and green beans. The meat was so tender and the sauce so delicious. I kind of wished I ordered that instead!

I ordered the Bistro Filet served over mashed potatoes and the same vegetables but mine also included thinly sliced zucchini. The filet had a tiny touch of truffle oil which wasn't too distracting. Even after my less than thrilling experience with the truffle oil doused mushroom slice at Napizza the other week, I still wanted to try this dish. Luckily the truffle taste was understated. Too much of it would make me want to hurl!

OMG, just look at that juicy meat! Loved this!

TC is a lucky kid since she got to enjoy the leftovers the next day!
I'm glad that we went here for dinner. This is one of our favorite restaurants for brunch/lunch and dinner. As mentioned in a previous post, we wanted to have some chocolate for dessert but unfortunately, Moonstruck Chocolatier (a Portland based company) was no longer in business, at least in San Diego. Instead, we went to Caffe Calabria for our dessert...
It's so wierd for me to post out of order, but earlier the same day, my neighbor and I were checking out a few ethnic markets. We'd already gone to Pata Negra for Spanish food items. Then, it was on to get some Portuguese stuff!

Looks like you guys had a great date!
25 Forty is just a perfect restaurant. Everything looks so good. That's the first place I had raw kale; now it's a pretty regular part of any salad made at home.
hi cab - It was quite relaxing...we were there before the dinner rush. you know me, anti-social...
yes Cathy - it's a nice cute little place. we've liked everything there so far but ironically we haven't really had desserts there.
