The Waterfront Grill at Pier 32, National City

We had a training yesterday and for lunch, my coworker recommended a restaurant at Pier 32...

which was the Waterfront Grill...

As you can see, the flag is half-staff due to the Las Vegas tragedy the night before.

Neither Mr. TJ nor I had been here before but now that we know it's here, plan to do a revisit.

See that bridge? That is the bridge from the 5 that leads to the 54 west.  You would never know this place is here while on the freeway. The waterway is the Sweetwater Channel, which runs right through Chula Vista and National City, running parallel to the 54.

There is seating both inside and out.

You order and pay inside and they will bring your food out to you.

As I was waiting in line, I saw on yahoo news that rock legend Tom Petty was taken to the hospital the night before for cardiac arrest (tribute post was up last evening)...I was so bummed out with this news along with the terrible tragedy in Las Vegas. It baffles me that people could be so evil.

The weather was nice outside so we chose to dine on the patio, where small gangs of birds and a fearless squirrel were lying in wait to either get fed crumbs or for fallen bits from messy diners.

The view from our table:

No pix of that squirrel though.

We all got the lunch special - a half sandwich with a cup of soup (we all chose chowder; the other choice was beef vegetable).

Roast Beef for my colleague...

Turkey for Mr. TJ:

BLT for me:

This clam chowder wasn't really chowdery.  It was not as creamy as clam chowder and tasted like it almost had tomato in it, but not enough to make the soup pink.

In retrospect, I should have ordered roast beef after having seen how fully packed my colleague's sandwich was.  The bacon in my sandwich was cut up. I thought the bacon would be in strips, so this was not very easy to eat. The portion was right for a light lunch.  Great view, nice venue and friendly service here.

As mentioned earlier, I'll have to come back here in the near future with Bert and TC. There are a few other items on their menu I want to give a try!
