23rd Anniversary - Breakfast at Little Lion Cafe + OB

Another year just flew by...

in which Bert and I celebrated twenty three years of marriage...

I still remember frantically getting ready at home in the morning with my best friend helping me to get into my dress (which has never been cleaned and languishing in a box somewhere and it will never fit me again, omg, ha ha) while I tried to put on my eye makeup.  My wedding day was the first and only time I ever had a manicure (I'm a no-nonsense chick in terms of nail shit. Seriously, I just paint my nails myself. Nothing fancy. I don't have time to sit and lollygag in a salon), believe it or not, heh heh.  The day was a blur from the ceremony to the reception and taking photos with family and friends. Despite how fast the day seemed to go, I still have many fond memories of our wedding day.

So enough reminiscing.  Fast forward to earlier today when TC accompanied us to breakfast in OB, specifically at Little Lion Cafe, which we enjoyed last fall.

We were there bright and early (they open at 8 am; it was 8:15)...No wait and luckily, a table for three was made available.

Pastries were made by Michele Coulon Dessertier (the owners' aunt) and were delicious, flaky and fresh - the chocolate croissant in the back and a cinnamon pinwheel in the front.  Look at those layer.  They were so crispy and buttery.

Bert's latte made with housemade caramel and my cocktail called the Sunday Darling (rose spritzer with matcha and raspberries). The flavor combination was intriguing and it tasted refreshing.  TC got a berry smoothie with chia seeds; she wasn't too much of a fan because the drink was too watery for her liking. Bert really liked his caramel latte, which was so smooth and mellow.

Our breakfast spread:

Bert tried the poached eggs special which was served over baguette, sea bass, avocado and topped with roasted shisito peppers.  All of our dishes were served with organic fresh fruit including mulberries, which we hardly ever see. He really liked this dish, especially the flaky sea bass.

I got what TORC ordered the first time I visited Little Lion, the egg salad croissant sandwich, which had mixed greens and thick cut bacon (which tasted almost candied). This was the perfect portion size.

TC tried the prosciutto, served with mozzarella cheese, arugula (which she picked off and gave to me) on top of Romesco sauce and olive bread.  This was actually too much for her to finish, so we "helped" her, ha ha.

Service was great here. The gals who run this place are super nice and it's easy to see why Little Lion is a local favorite.  The food is high quality, served beautifully and in such a charming setting. A perfect way to start the day...

Next door was this auto clinic that had a lot of vintage cars in their lot. This was an old Ford (model T perhaps?), along with a Cadillac and a rusty Plymouth (not sure which model though).

Near where we parked was this cool mural at the Ocean Breeze Wash & Dry...

As we walked to the pier, the black rectangle on the wall was now filled in with the types of businesses in that building. This parking lot, by the way, used to be owned by Nati's Mexican restaurant. Signs on their window showed however, that their last business day was June 7th. Nati's has been around for 58 years (TC and I ate there three years ago). The owners decided to retire and from what I read, many employees had worked for Nati's for forty years! Apparently, they were closed for a remodel last fall but ended up being sold. No word on who bought the property yet and what it will become.

The sun was already peeking out and turning out to be another awesome day in San Diego...

Tide was still sort of high but low enough for some folks to explore some of the exposed section of the tidepools.  Surf was also up (no pix)...

One of these days, we'll finally eat at the Walk on Water (WOW) Cafe on the pier, which Cathy from mmm-yoso has (see hee post here).

Previous visit to Little Lion Cafe:
November 2017

We ended up going to coffee afterwards (that post will be included in a future drinks compilation) and heading back home to recharge. Dinner would be spent out at one of our favorite places later that afternoon...
