Summer Road Trip Day 3 - Good People Coffee Co., Sawtelle

We headed east on Santa Monica Blvd. for our fix...

to four month old coffee shop, Good People Coffee Co.

It was still early enough that we found relatively easy parking around the corner. The guys (co-owners) working the counter were so welcoming and friendly.

Yes. True.

We liked that they emphasized community at the shop. They were were also getting set up for a coffee tasting and cupping later that morning and invited us to stop by for it.

Our drinks - traditional macchiato once more and Bert's mocha. I have to say that this was one of the best macchiatos I've ever had. The espresso was not burnt tasting (hello Starbucks) but smooth and full bodies. The foam was carefully dolloped on the surface by the barista (I was watching how he did it and it does make a difference when someone cares about presenting your drink nicely).

Although I didn't post a photo of their menu board, many drinks had interesting and cryptic names, which prompts customers to "ask" about them. I liked that because it encourages conversation between customer and the barista. Some of their drinks were really creative and I was bummed I could not try them all.  Imagine all of that caffeine just in one morning. I'd be too wired!

One of their drinks was the suggestively named, "Cherry Popper", which contains espresso, tonic water and a cherry reduction topped with a maraschino cherry. The drink is presented with the distinct layers. You are supposed to stir the drink to meld the flavors, which I did after taking the perfunctory "camera eats, or in this case, drinks first" pix.

The drink was beautiful looking but also super sweet. I couldn't handle too much sugar this early and took it to go to enjoy later after our planned brunch.

Incidentally, a few weeks later in San Diego, new coffee shop, Scrimshaw offered their own version of this drink called the Belmont. I haven't posted photos of that visit yet, but they elevated it by incoporating tiki bitters and using a floral etched tall glass for the presentation.

Below, beans in bowls for their tasting/cupping event.

This was a really cool shop with super nice owners. They were not pretentious a-holes but down to earth young men who seemed genuinely interested in making connections with their customers, regulars or not.
