The Nest

My original plan for the day after New Year's Day was to watch the Rose Parade on TV...

Since NYD fell on a Sunday, the Parade itself was held the following Monday, which was yesterday.

Bert and I had another free morning. TC was out doing sports practice and Bert had the DVR set to record two different channels for the Rose Parade...

which I ended up watching later that afternoon, uninterrupted on KTLA.

This particular morning was overcast. It had rained the night before. There was a coffee shop located in a home good/gift store one block away from the Ocean Beach pier called The Nest. I didn't realize until looking more into it that The Nest is the sister coffee shop of The Lazy Hummingbird (also in OB and located in another business complex with a FedEx).

We parked on Niagara near Nati's. When you see this mural and the phonetic pronunciated of "teter",  that is the building housing The Nest.

Inside, it is bright, rustic and airy with the coffee counter in the back. There are books, cards, jewelry, art work, candles, body scrubs, lip balms, and such. There are three different businesses inside teter; all of the artisans are local I believe.

Their menu:

The gals working here by the way are super nice and very friendly. There are tables in the back but all were occupied so we grabbed the lone table near the front window.

Bert's double macchiato and my affogato with vegan coconut ice cream drizzled with honey (I was given a choice) plus Bert's bearclaw from Bread and Cie.  The beans are from Foxy Coffee, which is now located in Portland, Oregon. The main roaster, Josh Bonner, used to own the short-lived Ladies & Gentlemen Coffee Roasters in Sherman Heights. Hawthorn Coffee in North Park also uses Foxy.

Foxy....Foxy Lady!

Now THIS was a good bear claw. Chock full of almond paste goodness as well.

Double the caffeine...

It seemed a little early to be having something sweet in the morning (I'd eaten a light breakfast earlier) but I wanted to try something different, so this was it. The coconut ice cream also had toasted coconut flakes which gave it some texture. The addition of honey was also a flavor risk which paid off. I really enjoyed my affogato with an unusual ice cream flavor; normally I'd associate it with vanilla or chocolate or even mocha ice cream but not coconut. This was a great combination.

I hadn't worn my waterproof Timberlands in a while. This was an expensive pair bought for our Portland 2012 trip which I wore every damn day we were on vacation. It didn't rain today but I wanted to be prepared plus my feets were cold! This is VERY rare for me since I am more apt to wear flip flops than socks and shoes but man, was this winter rainy or what!

Mural on the west facing wall of Teter/The Nest.

I'll be doing a separate OB Pier post, but here's what the surf looked like that morning...

Pelicans!

Coffee # 1 down. We wanted to see if this other place in Point Loma was open before heading back down south...

Ohhh, your sweet coffee choice looks good. I don't know if I'd start the day off with one but it looks good! It has been so cold lately - it feels like we're having a REAL winter this year!

I agree, itt was kind of too early in the morning for that affogato but what the hey. This is such a cute coffee shop/store. I'd love to revisit and just may do so for an upcoming friend's birthday food crawl.
