Gloria Muriel (Glow) & Beth Emmerich mural at El General Market + canyon markers, Azalea Park

Yesterday Bert and I had a bit of an adventure...

(Tet festival sign seen on 805 off ramp to Home Ave)

we had coffee at two different places, Butler's and Tech Outfitters ...

and after dropping off some donations at the Goodwill on Home Ave...

went up the hill on Fairmont. There was a nearby mural done in 2012 by Gloria "Glow" Muriel and Beth Emmerich, the same arties who restored this mural at the intersection of Home and Fairmont Ave..

(check my restored "Peace on Earth" mural, corner of Fairmont and Home Ave, City Heights post from Nov. 2016)

We made a left on Quince by mistake instead of Poplar, which was fine. The "Coffee" signs in the median are in reference to neighborhood coffee kiosk, Burly and the Bean which we visited last summer.

In fact, we passed by Burly and the Bean while en route to our destination, a local market with a mural on one of its walls. There's the owner and his wife (the namesakes of the coffee place). It's kind of cute how it's ensconced in the neighborhood. The coffee hut now has its own garden and recently hosted a neighborhood potluck and sponsored a family for the holidays. That's really great community involvement. Nice to see and read about this.

Further along Poplar St is El General Market. It's right next to one of the trails for Manzanita Canyon, which leads us to this mural b Glow and Emmerich. It was put up in 2012 to highlight the urban canyons in this area of City Heights and to encourage folks to hike in the canyons which used to be kind of bad to walk around it. Maybe in the daytime it's fine, but that would be another story at night.

Anyhow, the north facing wall of the market has the mural and as luck would have it, cars were parked on the curb blocking the full view of the beautiful mural.

Of all of the Glow murals I've documented, this is one of the prettiest. I'm partial to it because I love the color purple so much.

The signature look of Glow's mysterious nymph like girls...

Love it. This mural is simply gorgeous.

Aaagh, if only that planter wasn't in the way, along with those cars.

Map of the surrounding area. The circle represent markers for the canyon trails.

Cute woodland animals...

The artists' signatures.

On the other side of the market, three palm tree sculptures and two defunct pay phones.

Across the street, a low cylinder decorated with mosaic.

Even the trash receptable was decorated...

One of the markers for the canyon trails...

Back to the opposite side once again. The small street the mural faces is called Jamie's Way and leads to this sign designating it as Manzanita Canyon.

Here is what the mural looks like without any obstructions:

It really was a pretty day to be out and about. Our morning of adventuring was done. We were off to see TC at her sports tournament. We made a mental note to return here to explore in the near future.

There is also another Glow mural I want to check out. It's on the wall of a local school academy in the Allied Gardens neighborhood. It would be a good excuse for me to revisit Maggie's Cafe and maybe even Bear Buns Bakery.
