In early fall, Bert and I went to check out Blackmarket Bakery...

They were supposed to be in "soft opening" stage (early October) but in fact, were not open that early in the morning despite posted hours on their site. They would be opening later in the week, they said...
Here's what the storefront looked like in the summer:

Sometime in early October, Bert and I made another visit after they had their grand opening. As you can see, it was night time. We picked up a few pastries to enjoy as dessert after our dinner at Bourre Southern Bistro.

They had a lot of prepackaged cookies and sweets in their walkway area. At the display counter were their cookies, croissants, and other pastries with a separate case for their cakes. As it was later in the evening, there unfortunately wasn't a large selection the night of our visit.

Bert had a hot mocha while I had the iced version (beans by local roaster, Dark Horse), a chocolate croissant and what they called a 'chocolate walnut mudslide'. This was like a fudgy cookie/brownie hybrid. We really enjoyed both pastries (didn't finish them) but didn't feel they were as fresh as they could have been given the later hour. The croissant was chock full of dark chocolate chips and was buttery and flaky. Bert really enjoyed that mudslide concoction. It was very rich but had nice texture from the walnuts.

Drinks were good and needed on this chilly evening.

Fast forward to the winter break when I had a free Saturday to do errands. I was there to meet up with a childhood friend who was exhibiting her wares at a local craft show.

Their pet friendly back patio was also finally completed. There is a lot of seating along with tiny chairs for toddlers, and a fake grass area. The gate leads to their own private parking lot, so note to selves. If you plan to eat here or at Polite Provisions, Soda and Swine or even Beerfish (which Cathy has visited), parking is FREE.

Nice, eh?

I picked up a box of almond brownies to gift my friend as well as a ham and cheese croissant for myself (late breakfast that day) and one for her to enjoy during her time at the craft fair.

This was fresh, warm, flaky and the perfect bite for breakfast. Ham and cheese, always a good combination.

Fun cut out for a photo opportunity.

The day after our last day at work, D and I were out and about looking for the Prince murals in Normal Heights and Barrio Logan. After enjoying our lunch at Tajima, we headed to Blackmarket for their pastries. This was D's trio of croissants - plain, almond and ham and cheese.

Their almond had cinnamon on top, which Bert really liked (I bought one for him as well) but that I did not. I also bought a chocolate hazelnut braid which I liked so much better. It was like eating a fancy Tiger Tail donut but waaaay waaaaay better.

If this only didn't have cinnamon on it...

The fold looked uneven to me, but I didn't care since I wasn't going to eat it. As always, Bert enjoyed this pastry with his coffee.
Who else went to Black Market Bakery?

They also offer breakfast and lunch items here. I'll have to give those a try in the near future with Bert and TC. As for D, she really enjoyed their almond croissants and counts it as one of her new favorites.
