Cafe Cabaret

A few weeks ago, Bert and I were craving some coffee. The original place we wanted to go to was closed although their website's hours listed them as 'still' open.

Instead of sticking around the same area to find a coffee place, we took the scenic route through City Heights. At night. That was quite the experience to say the least...

We ended up traveling across town to Normal Heights to Cafe Cabaret, a place I'd seen only in the daytime and was curious about. It was only coffee we wanted since we already had a dinner place in mind. It was dim inside and only one person was working the counter that evening.

As you enter, there is a seating area in an adjacent room as well as the main room and a few tables outside. We just ordered a couple of coffee and on a whim, a piece of baklava. I read that Cafe Cabaret had Lebanese food and figured since it had a Middle Eastern flair, the baklava might be good.

Bert's hot coffee and my mocha. I guess I thought this was an actual coffee place but it's more of a cafe that just serves coffee. Both of our coffees were kind of blah. Mine had an unpleasant burnt taste to it.

The bakalava was a large triangular piece filled with walnuts and drizzled with chocolate. After having had bakalava recently from Pistachio's Sweets, this one piece was downright awful. It tasted old and stale. I only had a couple of bites and I was done. Bert couldn't bring himself to finish it either.

This was one of the worst pieces of baklava we've ever tried. Never again.

Maybe this place has a better ambiance in the daytime and their Middle Eastern food is better than their pastries. Who knows. We didn't stay too long here, just long enough to finish our coffee.

Their website listed on you know where is broken so don't bother clicking on it.

Our next destination was dinner over in Spring Valley. We were hankering for some N'Orleans style food...

How sad to ruin baklava! It doesn't even look like the top is "done" or very crispy or has any honey sauce on it. Your photos make it seem like a dark and gloomy place but maybe it's only because it was at night...

I didn't use the flash and it was pretty dim in here. Their baklava sucked.
