La Ley was curious to try the new Eastlake location, having enjoyed the other locations in San Diego. This used to be the old Eastlake Brewhouse, which closed unceremoniously two years ago...
The inside is still the same, but just redecorated to look Italian with red/white checked tableclothes and bottles of Chianti on the shelves.

We decided to split a 10" pizza (the works which only has three toppings - pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms) and a chopped antipasto salad. La Ley really liked this salad at the other Chula Vista location. This is when things started to go downhill. While our waitress was a really nice young gal, she forgot a few things that she was supposed to give us (bread, butter and straws). No problem. Then the salad arrived and man, it looked like it was three days old. Seriously. La Ley spoke up first, "I think that salad isn't fresh". The waitress said, "Oh, the lettuce is chopped up; it's supposed to look that way". Really? Then I chimed in and said, "Well the lettuce does look old and brown." We asked for a new salad and when we got it, it looked a tiny bit fresher, but it wasn't that much better.

Our "2nd" salad that was a little bit greener. Later on that day, La Ley texted me and said she felt nauseous because of the food. I bet it was that not so fresh salad. Luckily, I didn't have any problems. Bottom line, this really sucked. It was not worth $9 or whatever. What a waste of $$.

The pizza wasn't much better. The dough tasted like the kind you can buy premade, like the kind we used to have TC make when she was a young kid. Maybe I've been spoiled by the better pizza places in Little Italy, North and South Park, but this was quite dismal. It was thick and doughy and there were hardly any toppings. It was mostly cheese and tomato sauce.

We did get bread and butter prior to the salad and sadly, that was probably the best thing we had during lunch that day.
The waitress came by giving all of the tables bags of free bread which we saw it earlier when we walked in, piled on a banquette. Each bag held a dozen which she later divided into paper bags for us. I wonder if these were day olds?

I don't expect gourmet quality at a chain like Filippi's, but the food here was really not that great. For Eastlake, you would expect a little bit better, but even the pizza at Pizza Hut or even Little Cesar's is better than this (gag). Really. It's as if they don't expect anyone eating here to have standards. We just had a simple pizza and salad and both were of below average quality.
Apparently, a lot of other folks think this place is terrible (due to service, quality of food, etc), hence the mostly dismal reviews from you know where...
It's almost funny but sad to see all of the 'one star' reviews and the manager's canned responses to almost each and every negative review.

I think it is the oven- at each of these 'new' locations of FIlippi's... The oven at the Little Italy location has been there for decades and somehow makes better bread and pizza crust. So strange.
That is the most pathetic version of a works pizza I have ever seen. I was curious about the newest outpost of Filippi's but will definitely steer clear.
hi cathy - could be....not having a good enough oven.
junichi - thanks for visiting. the pizza here wasn't that great and you could get a better "works" from pizza hut or costco.
I've heard the only good location is the original. I've only dined at the other locations and have never been impressed. It looks sad :(
The original is always the best they say. Don't bother with this place
