where we bumped into several friends/conference attendees who happened to choose the place because it was the closest Thai restaurant to the hotel...
Not long after we ordered, it started to pour. REALLY HARD! Thunderstorms and flash flood warnings were given to East County residents.

We got the Naked Shrimp (Plah Goong) and the Fried Perch ($25).

The tender shrimp had a massive kick to it, even though we asked for a '2' in spice level (yes, we're wimps, haha). The mixed greens were nice and fresh and we could taste the lemon grass and lime leaves in the sauce. The fried perch had a different look and treatment than the rockfish. There were julienned green apples and shredded carrots, sliced red onions, fresh cilantro and cashew nuts. Now that was a MOUTH on that fish, haha. But seriously, the fish was filleted so well that we didn't have to work too hard to get the meat off the bones. I loved the crispy skin too!

All that remained of our fish friend...

Leftovers were saved for TC who was toiling at dance practice. She and the dance company would later perform that evening at the gala event.
Previous visits to Supannee:
The night before when we had dessert with our out of town friends
Plus last weekend when Cathy and I had the fried rockfish
I think one of the waitresses already recognizes us. One of the young male servers asked Bert if we were friends with the folks at the other tables and for the most part, we knew most of them. We explained that there was a Filipino American History conference in town and that they all happened to come here for lunch, unbeknownst to us. As he was talking, another group of four conference goers came in, one of them whom I had spoken to a few hours earlier recommending this place. They saw what we had and took heed of my recommendation for the fried rockfish. Most of the folks at a neighboring table got "safe" Thai dishes like Pad Thai or fried rice even after I recommended the ginger pork, the Thai sausage and the Nam Tohk. I guess some people feel safe in their Thai comfort zone. To each their own, eh.
It was kind of funny to hear how "loud" the restaurant was with a lively bunch of folks. In fact it was so loud that a non-Filipino guest got up and left. I wasn't sure if he left because he was done eating or was annoyed that it was loud.
Next time, the fried halibut or the pompano!

We are going to go back to try this one. The variety and combination of herbs and spices used is amazing. Thanks for introducing me to Supannee.
I want to try the fried halibut next time. I think you and your husband will like this perch Cathy.
