Bake Sale Cafe & Bakery

[Update - Bake Sale is CLOSED as of Spring 2017]

After a whole week of not blogging due to being pretty damn tired from work and the stress that comes from the opening of the school year, I have returned...

It was another beautiful Saturday morning in what is becoming a new routine for Bert and myself...

which is exploring new places after dropping off TC at dance practice. Once again, we were in the East Village. This time, to check out the fairly new bakery appropriately named Bake Sale. Owner/restarateur Terryl Gavre,  was there that morning along with a couple of photographers who were doing a photo shoot for the website. The pastry chef was posing for photos as we walked in.

There were lots of goodies on display such as morning buns, croissants, cookies, danishes, muffins, bread loaves, pastry bars, and biscuits (include one savory one with ham and cheese) and even ice cream sandwiches. The majority of the items were sweet. They were still working on their menu and were not quite ready to serve the sandwiches listed on their menu (a half sheet found on their counter). I loved how the items were displayed but kind of icked out by a lone fly. I secretly hoped that the fly didn't step on the items we eventually chose.

I really loved this display of mismatched plates. This is a really great design idea.

We ended up taking our items outside to enjoy the fresh air and also to be out of the way of the photographers.

Bert's iced coffee (before he added the half and half and sugar) and our morning bun and caramel pretzel bar. The tables and chairs outside were pretty old looking; the chairs had "public school" on the backs.

OMG, this was so good!!!  It was sweet, creamy, crunchy, with a tiny bit of chocolate. Bert said it had enough stickiness but wasn't overly sticky that it was a nuisance to eat. The pretzels gave it a nice texture.

I wasn't sure if I'd like this because it had cinnamon in it, but man, this was pretty good!  The exterior had a nice crackly caramelized look with a pleasant crunch. There were raisins in here but not enough to be considered overkill. The caramelized crunch was everywhere, especially the bottom (see turned over photo)...

Both desserts were a sweet way to start our morning. Bert's iced coffee was pretty smooth as well.

Bert had his coffee already. It was time for mine so we walked a few blocks over to the second location of a hipster coffee bar...

What a nice neighborhood joint. The recipes look like the randomness that shows up at Bake Sales. Good you have a new weekend thing to do; like dating!

It's a cute place Cathy. OMG, "dating", haha. I want to go back to try that lemon bar.

I read about this place and it seemed pretty cute. Good to hear that the goods were also tasty! The caramel pretzel bar looks really good! I would totally pick out all of the raisins in the bun though... actually, I'd be deterred to not even get it, haha. Were those really ice cream sandwiches or did they have cream filling in them? They looked like whoopie pies.

It's very cute in here and I am really digging that wall of plates!

There's not too many raisins in the bun. You should still try it though.

Those were fake ice cream sandwiches by the way. They did look like whoopie pies/moon pies.
