Pho Nhu Y, Chula Vista

Early this year, I noticed this banner in the stripmall which houses Carnival...

Fast forward to June...

and yes, Pho Nhu Y in Chula Vista is now open.

I was on my way back home after an appointment and when I saw the Grand Opening banner, decided to go in for some banh mi. They were open already and it was only 8:15 am.

The folks working here are very nice and friendly. The man who greeted me wanted to know if I lived in the area and how I heard of this place.

I only ordered two items this first visit  - two banh mi, egg (pictured below) and chicken. I had the egg sandwich which I got home, my sister had the other one later. She came over to help me that morning assemble the centerpieces and the candy souvenirs for our parents upcoming 50th wedding anniversary.

The bread was a french loaf that was nice and crusty when still fresh. However, when I had this at home about twenty minutes later, the insides had already absorbed some of the moisture and began to fall apart.  Those jalapeno peppers were also pretty hots. I've been lucky in the past with mild ones but these were pretty spicy.

At home, I glanced at their takeout menu and noticed they did not have egg bahn mi listed. I thought it was nice that they still made me the sandwich instead of saying, "Sorry, we don't make that".   As for the chicken banh mi, no photos here but just know that it looked exactly like my sandwich, but with chicken inside. My sis seemed to like it so I'm assuming it was decent.

The very next day, after a school related night meeting (yes, during vacation dammit) with Bert and TC, we stopped here before going home. The nice man remembered me and thanked me for visiting again.

Here is what made me stay up 'til 3 am.  Oh, I knew what I was getting into. I had a massive craving for a VN iced coffee (hardly any milk) and was taking my chances with sleep that evening. I lost.

View from our table near the front.

Bert and TC shared a pho (with rare steak and brisket). Scissors were even provided to cut the noodles (a first for us).

In addition, I had the fried spring rolls.

TC and Bert also shared the fresh spring rolls.

Verdict on the food - the banh mi would've tasted better eaten on the spot. The pho bro was waaaaaay too salty. OMG.  I'm glad I didn't eat that.  The fried egg rolls were pretty good. They didn't taste like they were fried in old oil and that's saying something since this was already the evening. The fresh spring rolls were okay according to TC. They were rolled a bit loosely.  Service was attentive and friendly.  we were given a bowl of bun with beef by mistake and I made sure to let them know so that the proper person could get his/her food (and it looked good too!).

I'm actually wondering if they have Bun Mam here CC? That was probably the best item, along with possibly the Bun Cha (on a good day) at Pho Nhu Y

Hmmm, maybe this isn't the same family. Their menu items are pretty run of the mill. Apoetizers, bun, com tam, pho, fried rice and some stir fried noodle dishes. Did not see Bun Mam on their menu.
