Spring Break Road Trip 2017 - Day 1: Tustin to Lost Hills + TC takes over

We left at the ungodly hour of 3:00 am, give or take a few minutes...

Our Spring Break Road trip was on!

Providing tunes on the dash was one of my CDs which happened to be set to one of INXS most atmospheric songs.

For the director's cut of "Donnie Darko", this WAS supposed to be the intro song. Instead, the theatrical released featured Echo and the Bunnymen's equally moody and atmopheric ong, "The Killing Moon" (one of my favorites and one that almost always makes appearance whenever I make an 80's mix cd, none of this happy poppy music for me, thank you very much).

TC usually sleeps whenever we leave for our roadtrips this early. She was already snoozing away. Bert does the first leg (or two)...

We usually try to time our arrival in Tustin at 4:30 am so we can have a stop at the Starbucks off the Red Hill exit. They open pretty early. Just our luck, it was NOT open and it was already 4:45. I guess the employee who was supposed to open slept in or something, so we ventured to another nearby place that we knew would be open...the 7-11 on Newport (which happened to be next to Halfsies, a donut and ice cream place that Mary visited earlier this year).

The coffee was passable for Bert. He just needed something to get him through the first few hours.

Our next stop was at Gorman...gas + bathroom stop. They also revamped their bathrooms (in a good way)...No more gross and weak hand dryer and doors that don't close well.

Up from Gorman was Highway 46. If you take it west, you will end up in Paso Robles, and further out, Cayucos.  We only made it a few seconds in so we could have breakfast at Carl's Jr.

See the picture? Let's see how reality stacks up with that breakfast burger, shall we?

Hash browns (or were they tater tots, who cares, it was delicious)! Bacon! Eggs! Cheese! What more could you ask for!

The real life breakfast burger was not quite piled as high, but we all enjoyed this.  The fried chicken tenders were mainly for TC. Yes, breakfast food at its finest.

Speaking of TC...she was freshly licensed earlier that week so, we utilized her new driving prowess to drive the next leg of our northward trek.

Crappily, there was an accident immediately after she got on the freeway, which slowed things down and we had to go on a slight detour. She did fine and drove for a little more than an hour until our next stop...

Some car had crashed into a ditch and cops and paramedics were there (not pictured). Lots of lookie loos though. Ugh.

After the detour, it was smooth sailing...
