over at the second location of Homestyle Hawaiian...
It was a Friday, so some Poke was in order. When I saw the prices, I kind of balked but figured I would give the original a try.

La Ley had the teriyaki salmon lunch combo (she let me try a piece and it was delicious, although I could make this myself at home):

Mr. TJ had the Kalua pork combo (not pictured). It looked kind of gloppy to me and had a lot of fat in it. No bueno.
As for my Poke (which is kind of hard for me to say with a straight face since Poke sounds so close to "Pookie" the Filipino slang term for the vadge). It turns out that there are TWO sizes for poke. The large, which is 1 lbs worth of chopped and seasoned fish, or the small, which is the 10 oz size. I chose the smaller size and man, was it a lot! It was also cheaper, $8.95.

The seasoning was a bit on the oily side (sesame) and I ate maybe about 1/4 of this. There were some spring lettuce leaves at the bottom but this would have been better served with some chips or something. I had to put a little of soy sauce on this to give it more flavor. TC wants to finish the leftovers tomorrow. The chunks were bigger than I thought they would be, but I liked it. The portion was also pretty big and this could have been shared as an appetizer for two or more people.
Homestyle Hawaiian is separated from the other part of the strip mall which also houses MJ's (advertising their 805 South Burrito; the other side of the sign says "Longannisa Fries").

Later today, we went to a local church for their annual Lenten Fish Fry, which was only $7 a plate. The meal consisted of battered fried fish, a bread roll, coleslaw, french fries, a dessert, and a drink. Not bad, eh.
The salsa dispenser actually held ketchup. There was also malt vinegar and Tapatio sauce, margarine, and tartar sauce.

The only difference was our choice of desserts and condiments. This was my plate but with Bert's dessert, carrot cake.

TC chose the chocolate cupcakes with pink frosting (they were dry).

Bert's plate with my dessert, a chocolate dipped cookie. I thought it was chocolate chip oatmeal but it had raisins in it. He let me have his plate earlier so I could take photos. There was a hold up with the fried fish portions (they were quite big too) since the portions are fried fresh every few minutes.

Too bad about the raisins and the cinnamon in the cookie. Bert liked it though. I had another idea for dessert nearby...

We hadn't been back to Oasis since last summer when Mr. Andrade (the owner) died.

One of the walls had a small tribute to him, a photo of Mr. Andrade in his younger days at the shop, a white rose and a tiny bottle of vodka.

The prices have been the same since 2014.

We were up for paletas tonight.

I got the Membrillo (a new offering), TC chose her standby favorite, the watermelon while Bert had coffee. Yes, both of us had two cream based paletas. We'll see how that goes later, heh heh. But OMG, it will be worth it.

The membrillo paleta (in the middle) has a strip of membrillo on top of a cream based bar. The quince paste is thick and sweet jelly like. It is also known as queso de membrillo (quince cheese) or as my friend La Ley calls it, ate de membrillo. You can buy membrillo at any Mexican market. I've seen it also at higher end stores with matching prices. Stick to the Mexican stores is my advice. Sometimes I've seen slices of membrillo served on cheese boards.

This is one of La Ley's favorite flavors for paletas. I wish they had TWO strips of the membrillo on the bar! I loved the flavor of the sweet quince with the plain bar.

It was so different seeing the store without Mr. Andrade. I believe his wife was the one who was working the counters that night. Even though it was almost closing time, the store was packed with customers enjoying their icy treats at the tables inside and out as well as folks ordering multiple scoops and paletas in line.

I was laughing so hard about the Filipino slang term for private parts. Thank you for teaching us :) Did they offer salmon poke at the restaurant too? That was a generous portion of the poke serving. I enjoy reading about your Friday lent meals. I know it sounds naive but I only recently found out that McD's filet o fish is offered during Lent (and gone whatever time after that). So that's why it's available now but they're offering it until the end of the year I think.
Heh heh, I try to be educational. Seriously, the word sounds TOO close to the other word, pookie. I believe the poke was only ahi. As for the Filet of Fish, I think it is offered all year but cheaper on Lenten Fridays.
