Aroma Thai and return to Babycakes in Imperial Beach

Several weekends ago, Bert and I were in IB. We had just dropped off TC to finish up some volunteer work with her friends so...

we headed down Coronado St. which turns into Imperial Beach Blvd. The "Art" noodle scuplpture is at the very end...

where you hang a right and pass the Surfhenge sculpture near the IB pier...

A few steps away was this bulding, with both Subway and Babycakes (pardon the craptastic shot)...Bert wanted to have some coffee and something sweet. Yes, before dinner. We, or rather, mostly he, did it backwards that evening. They were about to close in less than 40 minutes and there wasn't that big of a selection of cupcakes. Only one guy was working that evening.

This menu board was new. So new that they weren't ready to make the iced and blended drinks, to my disappointment. Bert got a hot mocha coffee with soy milk and a pistachio cupcake, which the guy peeled off the wrapper for us. I didn't have too much of it since I didn't want to spoil my appetite for dinner at the Thai place down the street.

If we go here again, I plan to use the coupon I found in one of those local papers seen above. There is a "buy one get one free" deal for Babycakes as well as a 20% your entire bill for the Coronado Brewing Company.

By the time we were through at Babycakes, it was already getting dark. We walked the few blocks up to the last Thai place in the South Bay I hadn't tried, Aroma Thai. To be honest, I didn't have high expectations but we were both curious. A friend of mine who is half Thai and who used to live in IB really likes this place. She told me that they make papaya salad the way she grew up eating it.

Although it looks small from the outside, it was bigger than it appeared to be. The decor was a bit haphazard mixed with Thai carvings, Buddhas, random wall sconces and some modern looking paintings.  A Christmas tree was still up since it was early January. The ladies who work here were were nice and welcoming. The clientele the evening we went seemed to be locals and racially mixed (mostly white and Hispanic plus us Filipinos, haha).

Our entrees - Thai  BBQ chicken and spicy noodles with shrimp. The chicken had a lovely aroma; you could smell the lemon grass, I think they used thigh pieces which had some fat to it, despite the lack of skin. Leftovers were enjoyed the next day. As for the noodles, Bert really enjoyed it. They weren't as spicy as he had feared it to be.

I think this about wraps it up for all of the Thai places in the South Bay. I can honestly say I've been to all of the ones south of the 54. I'll have to do a compilation post next time.

We'll have to take TC here next time so she can try her tried and true favorite and so we can try some of their other specials.

Babycakes sure do like to make their cupcakes look bloody haha. That blood orange one with that drip of blood coming down! Blood orange sounds kind of good though, I must admit.

The Thai BBQ chicken looks pretty good, looks like it got a nice sear on it. Also looks like a pretty evening out!

omg, that's right! haha! it's not a good look though, the bloodiness of it.

the cool thing is that everything is so close together here, the cupcake place, the thai place, and even though we didn't go, Sea 180 and the Coronado Brewing Co.
