Day 3 - SLO Donut Company

Returning to our Summer Road trip, not to be confused with the SF Road Trip (which posts I am still trying to finish)....

It was time to say goodbye to Cayucos and the cute little place we stayed....

We would miss their beautiful garden just steps away from the beach and having our dinners out in the patio. As we took photos, we met another family also on vacation (they were from Madera, CA). Everyone we met during our stay was so kind and nice and we are hoping to make another stop here in the future...

Everything was packed and ready. Southward we would go...

making a stop in the town of San Luis Obispo for our donut fix at the SLO Donut Co.

Since it was summer time, there weren't a lot of students here that morning. I'd read that this donut shop was very popular with the Cal Poly SLO students as well as the community college kids. SLO DoCo opened in 2010 and makes all kinds of donuts with your standard flavors as well as more creative and unusual combinations, along with croissants, cronuts (I'm so over those) and a donut variant that they call  "pillows", which look exactly like the sugar version of one!

Their famous "pillow" donuts:

As you can see, there is a lot of seating and space for students to kick back, study, and plug in their devices. There is also cool artwork on the walls, some for sale. The shop is also open 24/7, so that's pretty handy for those who need to do a late night cram session AND stuff their face with donuts.

Our nutritious breakfast:

Looking at this more than six months later, I'm just glad that I saved the photo of the receipt (seen at the end), otherwise, I wouldn't have remembered what all this was...

Cereal topped donut (TC's):

Bert's maple bacon bar. We liked that the bacon was chopped out and spread out over the glaze unlike other versions which have whole bacon strips on top. Those are akwards to eat because when you bite into the strips, it invariably comes off. With this one, you get bacon goodness in every bite. So there.

Their version of the cronut (yes, I caved and got one. I don't think I've had one since then to be honest). This was pineapple filled.

A berry filled pillow. I don't remember if this was blackberry or blueberry or what but it was pretty $%#@ good!

The other Pillow was Bert's - it was chocolate and peanut butter glazed with a pb filling. THAT he liked.

The pillows are a good way to conserve space. Just cut 'em up instead of having to worry about circles and holes.  The berry filled pillow was lighter and fluffier than the pb filled one. Both were a bit too unwieldy to eat. I couldn't see myself eating more than one in one sitting.

Hmmm, I noticed the apple fritter wasn't on the receipt. I don't remember if it was bought separately and thus wasn't on the receipt or if they didn't ring us up for t his.

Yes, pineapple NOT lemon. I would never order a lemon filled donut.

Our apple-fritter-less receipt.

We nibbled on most of them and saved the rest for later. I wanted to save room for lunch (and coffee),,,

A cool video I found that shows the donut making process (it's in reverse in some spots):

plus another one celebrating their 3 year anniversary back in 2013:

Glad we made a stop here. It was nice being there when it wasn't crowded.

We bought some gum at a gas station earlier, which should be a "clue" about our next destination..

I have a strong feeling I'd really like some pillow donuts. Especially if they're chocolate & peanut butter! Yum!

I think you'd like them. I think they're much better than those sorry ass brioche donuts from Streetcar.
