Homestyle Hawaiian, Linda Vista + Lion Coffee

Continuing our vacation routine of going out to lunch with friends, TC and I had the pleasure of meeting up with Carol of CAB Cooks...

over at Homestyle Hawaiian near Kearny HS...

Both TC and I hadn't tried the original location before, only the one near our place in Chula Vista. Noticing the condiments, it's funny how ubiquitous Sriracha sauce is nowadays. Before, it would only be seen at Vietnamese restaurants and now you can find it everywhere!

It was still early (we got there when they opened) and despite the constant Jawaiian soundtrack (my "favorite" kind of music....NOT), we really enjoyed our meals, although we all barely put dents in them. Carol had the Korean fried chicken (her "go-to" meal at Homestyle Hawaiian, she says), I had the Portuguese sausage and rice with an egg fried over hard (special request because I hatez runny yolk, yo) and fried Spam musubi to share, while TC had the chicken katsu. All of our combo plates had rice and mac salad (carbs galore). The sausage had a snap to it and were cut thick.

Runny yolks = barf.

As for that deep fried Spam musubi?  This was a bit on the salty side, but I loved it (unlike TC). It was VERY fried and crunchy from the Panko. I liked the texture as well as the furikaki on top. The squiggle you see is NOT mustard but some sort of spicy mayo.

We used my coupon for the Lion Coffee kiosk across the ways. Up2You, our dessert destination just a few doors down was not yet open.  We originally wanted one acai bowl (TC's choice) and a Hawaiian shave ice.  Unfortunately, their shave ice machine was broken, so the girl offered to give us two acai bowls instead. While this offer "maximized" my coupon (and went over the $5 limit by $2), it was kind of like settling for a crappier alternative.

This was my third time trying an Acai bowl and my opinion is still the same. I don't see the appeal.  Carol and I shared, or rather picked at, ours while TC had her own. We brought home the bowls in our trusty cooler for later. Again, this is way too "granola" for me. Me no like. I keep wanting to think that the acai crap is chocolate, because it kind of looks like it, but it's an intense berry flavor.

Who else has gone to Homestyle Hawaiian?
Kirk has been here a couple of times in 2009, plus some revisits in 2011 along with a more recent writeup from August 2014.

I think I've learned my lesson already with these damn acai bowls. TC really likes them but I can do without.  As for the Spam Musubi, it's best enjoyed in moderation, like all foods that are bad for us, heh heh.

My favorite thing here in the Lava Chicken! Which sounds like it would be really spicy but it's not. You know me and spice! That sausage looks really good, I haven't tried that before. We seem to order the same things when we come here, haha.

The acai stuff does look like chocolate, how weird. I've never had it before. Maybe I'll try it someday. Or maybe not.
