Carlsbad Danish Bakery

[Update - Closed.  As of 11/2015, the bakery is now known as "C'est La Vie, The Cake 'n Quiche Company"]

One the last Friday of my vacation, Bert was able to get the day off so he could spent it with us...

We would be meeting up with Superman for lunch up north in his neck of the woods...

However, we left early enough to grab a few bites at the Carlsbad Danish Bakery...

which is located on one of the main streets of the downtown district known as Carlsbad Village.

I had a coupon  that I wanted to use, rather than a "buy one get one free" deal, it was 50% off your ENTIRE ORDER (up to $10 off). Mary, if you're reading this, take heed! Looking back, we should have taken full advantage of it and bought $20 worth of stuff to get the $10 off, but we didn't want to go overboard. Plus, I still have an online coupon I could use that for. This was our exploratory visit.

It smelled so good in here that I could barely concentrate on what I wanted, haha. There were cakes and so many kinds of pastries (eclaires, croissants, cannoli, danishes, coffee cake, brownies, and cupcakes to name a few).

We each chose one pastry and took it outside to enjoy...

TC's cannoli - she liked the tiny bite size portion and proceeded to enjoy my particular pastry as well (it really was that good)...

Bert gravitates towards bear claws. This one was pretty flaky and and had the most amazing almond paste filling. We found out later from Superman that Carlsbad Danish Bakery's version is THE ONLY ONE that his wife likes. That's saying a lot since she is very picky, so yeah, Bert picked a winner here.

This, now This...

This is the Chocolate Almond Pretzel, which is NOT a pretzel in taste, but rather, a twisted flaky pastry shaped into a pretzel (kind of but not really, but that's what they call it). It is studded with almonds, large sugar crystals and chocolate ribbons. Here is the bottom view:

Next time we go here, we are definitely getting more than one of these babies.

OMG, yes, the chocolate pretzel that's not a pretzel...

This was so fresh and flaky. I enjoyed about half of it, shared it with Bert,  then TC ended up finishing it off. Happily.

One last thing I want to mention - if you click on their website and click on their 'Products' link, then on 'Danish pastries' you will see that they offer KRINGLE here as well as a special pastry called "The Seven Sisters Coffee Cake" (named after the Pleiades, gotta love that!). I think I might want to order that Seven Sisters ahead of time!

We were slated to meet up with Superman pretty soon, so off we went to another stripmall just a few minutes away. Lunch would be at a place he chose and one that I was quite curious to try...

Yessss coupon love! Thanks for the head's up (that I'm finally getting around to reading, so far behind in my blog reading). We have a dinner thing we're going to in Carlsbad next month and I read about a sea cave in Carlsbad (saw a photo) that I want to explore so Carlsbad is in our future. Haven't been up that way in awhile, I'll be sure to check the book for other places. That "pretzel not a pretzel" thing looks sooooo good!

Yeah dude. Use 'em or lose 'em. They also have more coupons for your next visit, for a free pastry. I, uh, picked up more than one, heh heh.
