Below, TC's carved pumpkin project for her English class (this was a fake pumpkin). She carved out the face of Norman, the main character of the movie, "Paranorman".

Other kids in her classes ended up painting their pumpkins (stuff like Mickey Mouse or Clifford the big red dog, and Iron Man). She was the only one who carved, or rather, chipped off a design. She was also the only one with an animated character from a movie. This was before she added his stand-up hair, which she fashioned from wire and felt. It looked pretty cool...
Anyhow, here's a few more photos that didn't quite merit a separate post...
A "Marley" (as in Bob?) coffee vending machine near the defunct King's Fish House at the Otay Ranch Town Center. This coffee machine was seen about two weeks ago. We were just in the mall recently to watch "Ender's Game" (a pretty damn good adaptation of the book, I must say) and the coffee machine was gone! That didn't last long!

Still at the Otay Ranch Town Center is the newly opened Venga Venga Cantina & Tequila Bar. This replaced what was supposed to be El Vitral, which never even opened, and prior to that, Frida's, an upscale Mexican restaurant.
\That's Bert photobombing my shot!

A trio of artisanal chocolate bars from Eclipse...I was excited to try the Strawberry Balsamic, which was their limited edition flavor for their anniversary last year.

Somewhere in south Chula Vista on Orange...there's this house with religious paintings and quotes on their fence panels. It's too far away in this shot to see though.

Every Halloween, they have this ominous sign...

Nice. How cheerful.
During Christmas, they have another display featuring Jesus. I'll have to put that one in my random pix post for December...
When in doubt, use whatever you have in the pantry as a marinade!

Pour over meat of choice, in this case, boneless and skinless chicken thighs. Marinate overnight, bake the next day and there you have some delicious chicken to last a few days.

Top view of breakfast I prepared when Bert's mom stayed a few weekends ago. I like making it "buffet" style - hash browns, eggs, corn, turkey sausage and rice. Totally gourmet, I know.

A liquor store somewhere between Golden Hill and South Park...

I liked the shadows cast by this cool font on an apartment building (this was also between Golden Hill and South Park)...

During Fall break, construction was happening by the shops and bunny kitty mural on Fern St.

A cement walkway was being built...

Several weeks, later, when TC and I went out with KD and KDD, the same area had green carpet (to approximate grass? wth)...and a new taco truck, Tacos la Mezcla.

Their prices were on the steeper side. Perhaps it was because it was, cough, organic.

Looks like a fusion taco place, judging form their menu offerings.
Here's another view of the walkway.

Some books seen at The Grove store in South Park...

TORC and I thought this one was funny. We both said, "I know A LOT of people we could give this to!", ha ha.

These were cute vases shaped like books...

At one of the shops on Fern, a so-bad-it's-good black velvet painting of the late Michael Jackson. I'd venture to say that the origin is from the streets of TJ. I rather like that carved wooden frame!

Also in the same shop (Bad Madge, I think it was), a mini pair of Philippine wooden barrel men! Lift up the barrel...and...

Schwingggggg!!!!!

I know the base says "Hawaii", but every Filipino know that these wooden souvenirs are in fact from the Philippines. I think Hawaii was just painted on there. This was NOT the deluxe version where the arms swing up. I should know, I have one!!! Vintage from the 70's too!
In I.B., the Mariscos Isaac truck in a different parking lot. This time, it was the Bobar Liquor Store on Palm instead of the South Bay Lounge.

As seen at my local Rubio's...really?

I had a buy one get one free burrito coupon that I used with La Ley. Below, a trio of sauces...mild, hot, and chipotle.

Her shrimp burrito only had 3 or 4 shrimp. That kind of sucked.

This was my grilled fish burrito...

Too much filler (rice and beans) and not enough fish! But hey, one was free!
At MJ's for lunch a few weeks ago...

The guy gave me a complimentary bowl of their new hot and sour Tom soup.

I really hated this. It did NOT taste good at all. It was basically slaw flavored like kimchi! Ugh! Two bites was more than enough for me.
My lunch that day - citrus soy beef with red rice, Asian slaw and an Aloha sun drink...

I had one egg over hard (which wasn't really over hard since the yolk was still visibly runny) on top of the meat, which was really flavorful...

TC found some old Jamba Juice gift cards so we used them...

I used some wierd filter, hence the freaky colors and contrast, but I like it. One smoothie had mango, the other, berry something.

As seen at either Wal-Mart or Target. In any case, I bought both! $1.52 each!

The Pecan Pie is a new flavor this year. Cinnamon and sugar debuted last year. Of the two, I like the Pecan Pie flavor much better. It still doesn't replace the taste of a real slice of pecan pie!
Recently I was at my local Filipino market...

I was getting ingredients for the pork ribs sinigang soup.
This was cool that they still do these readymade trays of pre-cut vegetables for various Filipino dishes, like Pinakbet, a vegetable stew that incorpates bagoong (fermented shrimp paste) and pork.

This other tray was for sinigang - they included cut up white radish, two yellow peppers, okra and bok choy. You can't go wrong with any vegetables in sinigang in my opinion...

This was for Ginataan, a dish that uses coconut milk as one of its main ingredients. I have not yet made this particular recipe.

I had to leave with one of these snacks! I know they have them at Kababayan Market down south, but these are SEASONED!

Yes, that is MSG you see on the label.

This was a dish I made on the fly a few days ago...I sauteed onions and garlic and added fresh julienned bamboo shoots (packaged at Seafood City), then added a splash of soy sauce, Jufran banana sauce, and a spoonful of bagoong

I added some baby shrimp last...

This, now THIS was funny. I was behind this car at a stop light when I noticed the silver logo underneath the car name.
Yes. Bert Wolfe, as in my husband's blog name!

Turns out that Bert Wolfe is an auto dealership. Named after a real person, I'm sure. But my Bert gave himself that name as a spoof on Burt Wolf, a former travel/food guy that used to have a show on the Travel Channel eons ago. One of our friends said that Bert looked like him (he didn't really).
And this is why it's great to have Mexican friends...

La Ley's mom made a batch of homemade empanadas de calabaza this weekend...
La Ley was kind enough to give me this bag...I tried one while at work.

She said her mom made the dough with half white and wheat flour. She used piloncillo and pumpkin, but was missing anise (which I didn't really miss too much). The empanadas were dusted with sugar and cinnamon and smelled so good!

I normally don't like pumpkin anything, but these were quite good!

The day of my Ninang's burial, I thought I'd use this coupon since I was craving savory empanadas...

I hadn't been here in awhile. The kabob place on the corner went out of business and is now Jacalito Grill, a Mexican eatery.

And wouldn't you know it, Maye's Empanadas was also out of business and replaced by a Metro computer store, #$%@!!!! Damn you!

On my way back home, I thought I'd check on the progress of Manna BBQ in the Ralph's parking lot...

They are not yet open, but had signs (in Korean and English) that they were hiring!

It will be interesting when this opens. This replaces a former Filipino point point place called Lutong Bahay. It was pretty small inside so I wonder how this place will survive with such meager square footage.
That is it for now...I can't believe it's already November. The year is almost over! The holiday season is fast approaching! Anal me, I need to buy my Christmas stamps and order our cards!

I love love LOVE your random posts! It might be my shortening attention span, it might be my appreciation for variety... but whatever the reason, these always draw me in. The photos are terrific, too.
Weird that Pringles is introducing dessert-flavor product (see how I avoided calling them "potato chips?). I can't wrap my mind around that. Cinnamon & Sugar seems like it'd want to taste like churros...?
Not sure what to make out of "ONE NATION UNDER DOOM" either. Do you guys think that's a comic book reference?
SCHWING!!
hello paul, thank you for your kind words! someone is actually paying attention, ha ha!
pringles actually had a limited edition flavor featuring white dipped "crisps" with peppermint bits. ugh. i don't think so. but the pecan pie isn't too bad. the cinnamon sugar is kinda like a churro but not in tube form.
as for that house, a religious freak must live there. they are very anti-halloween and pro christmas (to each their own, right?). i seriously doubt they even read comic books, ha ha.
1) We're going to see Ender's Game tomorrow! I hope it's good. I read it earlier this year but I think enough time has passed that I won't be nitpicky (I hope).
2) I tried a white chocolate pretzel sea salt bar from Eclipse recently and I LOVED it.
3) I didn't like the Pecan Pie Pringles. Too weird.
4) Last I heard Maye's was moving to a new location, but I don't know where to.
The end :D
hi mary - i thought it was pretty good. let me know what you guys think. eclipse has some really neat flavor combinations. i just don't like white chocolate. i must've bought the pringles at target because i was just at walmart and they didn't have those limited edition flavors. about maye's - i wonder where their new location is (or will be?). thanks for the heads up on that. i was bummed not finding them there.
