who wanted to buy some candy at one of two candy places here in Julian...
The first one, The Candy Basket was not quite open yet but there was another candy place just a few steps down. See this cowboy silhouette? This photo was taken through a locked up iron gate. So no, you canot enter through here despite the sign. Instead...

you need to go through the front door of the Julian Drug Store which is a three story 100+ year old building that also houses a "candy mine" store on the bottom floor.
There was one lone worker who was preoccupied with his smartphone. The first floor had various sundries, souvenirs and what not. I also saw some baskets filled with these old fashioned candies. The flavor "HOREHOUND" amused me very much.

Horehound is an old fahsioned hard candy that has a bittersweet taste. It also has medicinal properties such as helping soothe sore throats and relieving intestinal gas (seriously) . Hmmm, I'm not sure I would enjoy a medicinal tasting candy though.
The Candy Mine was down this little staircase...

The decorations are a bit tacky but going with the "mine" theme, with the candy being in steel buckets and decorated with mining implements.

There was a wide variety of candy, some loose and some bagged. They had a lot of the "vintage" candies, as well as brightly colored salt water taffyies, gumbdrops, gummy candies, and even some sugar free varieties (ugh, why bother)...

I ended up getting one small roll of candy here...

I was so curious about this Guava candy. They are square pinkish colored tablets that are chewable. Think of the texture of Tums or Smarties but in square form. I just ate one right now and it does taste like guava. At best, they have a unique flavor. At worst, it's kind of like eating guava flavored chalk.

TC and her friend got a load of candy for themselves and also some candy to give as a gift to a mutual friend. You can see some Pop Rocks packets there and the salt water taffies.

The morning was still young. There was still a bit of that chill in the mountain air, but then, the sun was starting to peek through...
