Modern Times Cafe revisits

Last month Bert and I were out and about...

and made a stop at Modern Times Cafe...

which is also a brewery. It had been awhile since we were last here.

This time we sat in a corner area where there was a former church pew (look at the under the seat storage for hymn books). Looks like old (and sorry to say, ugly) lamps are back in style? Ironic hipster?

Sorry, that lamp base is hideous.  We had a bigger and browner one back in the 70's. We had it for the longest time until my parents finally got rid of it in the late 80's.

Our drinks plus marion berry pastry:

Cortado with almond milk.  There are only milk subs here since it's vegan friendly.  They used to carry macadamia nut milk but no longer.  I like the glass they use for cortados here. The pastry was on the dry side. I think it's because it's vegan. There aren't too many vegan pastries or desserts I've tried that I like, sadly.

The cortado was smooth and frothy.

Bert tried their Beer float slushie - I believe the beer was one of their darker beers (perhaps a stout, I forgot to ask) which comprised the slushie and it's topped with a shot of espresso.

This was pretty refreshing actually. Wished there was more espresso in here though.

On the most recent visit earlier this month...

Bert, in his "research" for holiday drinks,  had to try their holiday specialty, the peppermint mocha.

We also chose two pastries (the first and fourth listed).

The spread:

Pomegranate rose glazed pistachio cardamom scone and lemon curd black sesame meringue pop tart.

So they may "look pretty" but they don't taste all that great. Of the two, I liked the scone better. The pop tart was too damn dry. I was disappointed because the crust looked good. The meringue was spread on the thin side. The lemon curd filling was also sparse.  No bueno.  The scone, on the other hand was a bit more flavorful and not as dry.  The rose was only represented by the petal so that seemed to be only ornamental and not executed anywhere else for this dessert.

Our drinks:

The Peppermint mocha had finely crushed peppermint candies on top (or was it red sprinkles?). I had their cortado once more - this time in the actual cortado glassware (not like the rounded glass from last visit).

As before, smooth tasting.  Just right. No milk, but almond.

We'll have to go here next time at a later time so we can try their taps. There were quite a few that caught our interest.

Always enjoy the vibe here at Modern Times. For our first visit, since we came after 12 noon, they stamped our wrists since they start serving alcohol after 12.  Servers are always nice here. We sat at the bar for our second visit and chatted with one of the bartenders about his recommendations.  With vacation coming up, that visit may be quite soon!
