Zumbar Coffee & Tea

I just realized today is the 1st of April, a very great month, I must say.  It is also April Fool's Day but I'm not one for playing jokes on people, so this post will be pretty standard.

Last weekend we were up in the Mira Mesa area to drop off TC for a volunteer orientation. With a couple of hours to kill, I suggested to Bert that we try this "out of the way" coffee shop I'd read about from Darlene's Coffee Zagat post (linked at the end)...

When Bert saw the map, he remarked that it was next to a mutual friend's restaurant, literally on the opposite side of the tracks and close to the underside of the 5 freeway...

Zumbar Coffee & Tea is not even labeled as such in this tiny complex. It's next to some "cave" place (I couldnt' quite make out the words) and a high school friend's restaurant, the Grill (which Bert used to frequent when he used to work in the Sorrento Mesa area; he would often meetup for lunch with Mr. Saliva)...

So don't look for the word "Zumbar" because you won't find it.

It was quite packed since it was still early morning (around 9:45'ish)...

Of course you probably already know what I got...

Based on Darlene's post, Bert wanted a cappuccino...

Here was the view from our window seat with a nice view of the freeway, haha.

Our drinks and pastries:

Chocolate pastry and almond croissant:

I liked that this wasn't a giant piece. It was so flaky and buttery; I loved it!

Bert's almond croissant was also quite excellent...

What we liked best was the almond filling within...

Bert's excellent cappucino:

And yes, I got an iced mocha which was a bit too milky in my opinion. It was too "watered down" for me. It was like drinking chocolate milk but with a slight coffee taste.

We noticed that the couple next to us also had drinks with pretty multi-leafed designs. Bert thought his cup was pretty good! They guys working here were cool too. The vibe was lively and there were lots of families (some multi-generational with grandparents and babies) out and about that morning.

Who else went to Zumbar?
Cathy of Mmm-Yoso really likes this place and posted on it back in October 2010 while Darlene recently included Zumbar in her "10 Perfect Cups of Coffee" list for Zagat San Diego.

Since TC wasn't quite done with her orientation, we stopped by a local ethnic market to browse around...
