Charley's Famous Burgers

Now this was a place I've been wanted to go to forever. It was a beautiful and sunny not like the day before which was Black Friday. What a nice change up this was.

Before heading home from our errands that took us out to the La Mesa area (I had to stock up on my puff pastry squares from Vine Ripe), we made the trip out to Lemon Grove...

since it was on our way down...Bert's interest was piqued when I mentioned Charley's Famous Burgers. TC, of course, is always interested in burgers, except for the gourmet kind. No, these were nothing of the sort....

As you saw from the first photo, it's close to the freeway underpass. Charley's is not a fancy place. In addition to burgers, they also sold kabobs (which Cathy from mmm-yoso has had; her link at the end of this post)...

You can do the drive through or go to the walk up window. Prices here are very reasonable. Very hipster free, the way I like it.

I'll take one of each. Just kidding. No, seriously...

There is that walk up window. Around the corner fudge is made are some stone tables and benches.

I have been told about their apple turnovers and their shakes (in which apple turnover is a bonifide flavor choice)....

If you don't want to sit out near the front, there is also a covered seating area with three narrow tables and several pigeons (eww) strutting about as if they owned that place!

There was no shade outside, so we opted to sit in here. Surprisingly enough, the tables and benches were pigeon poo free!

The tables were also carved up by everyone and their mother.

Our apple pie shake. Yes. We had to have one of these!

This was a very rich shake with real ice cream and one of their fried apple pie turnovers blended into it! Sometimes, pieces of the crust would be sucked up into the straw, creating blockage (gross word - I always associate that with something intestinal). But man, what delicious blockage this was! Blended fragments of crust and pie...Whoever thought of this should be canonized.

Our very healthy meal...uh huh.

TC's Bacon Cheeseburger ($3.39). All burgers came dressed with shredded lettuce and sliced tomato and onions. There were three nice and thick cut bacon slices there. She was kind enough to let me have a bite which made me rethink my more plainer choice. Next time, I'll have to order mine with bacon!

This was my Deluxe Hamburger ($2.09 + .35 extra for the cheese slice)...

Lastly, Bert's Chili Burger ($3.09 + .35 extra with cheese)... He really liked this despite the messiness of the burger. It looked kind of difficult to eat but that was not a problem for Bert!

We also shared an order of fries (I don't recall the price)...just your basic frozen shoestrings here. We all agreed that our burgers were delicious! They were pretty basic but done very well. The meat was juicy throughout (cooked medium as we asked) and everything tasted pretty fresh.

The beef, lettuce, tomatoes and onions may not come from a local farm but that didn't bother us at all.

Of course, we could not forget this...Their FRIED apple pies! These look like McDonald's old apple (and cherry) pies, but better! Now McD's only has apple (unless you are in Hawaii where they have tropical flavors) and it is BAKED which is a travesty.

Two for $2! OMG, just look at those crisp edges!

These were piping hot and who cares if I burned the roof of my mouth when biting into this? It was worth it, ha ha!

The pies were a satisfying end for our lunch...

Now it was back on the 125 to head home down south!

Who else went to Charley's Famous Burgers?
Cathy of mmm-yoso went here back in October 2006 and posted again in July 2013.
Dennis got one of their shakes here in 2010...
Mary also went here recently this past August.

There is no website but here are the mostly postive reviews from you know where.

I'm already thinking of an excuse to be "in the area" again...

Seriously good food here. You did order good things (photo of menu shows large fries $2.09), do try a kabob or (double kabob) with bacon. Try anything with bacon here.

We have totally gotten a side of bacon here and then split the bacon amongst us to add to sandwiches so everyone can have a little bit of bacon love. The food here is so simple, so cheap and so good! We've been back several times, it's hard to resist getting one of those delicious apple pies. Yum!
