Little did I realize that we would get stuck in craptastic traffic on the way back. Call it naivete, but I didn't expect to be stuck on Grand Avenue, inching forward glacially for 45 minutes!
I was worried about the time because Bert and I were planning to meet up with Tatonka for drinks and dinner later that evening...
First thing's first though. On our drive up the 5 (this was approaching the 163), I saw this awesome specimen of artwork on a car and implored TC to get my camera out of my bag to snap some shots...

This car (not sure of the make but it wasn't quite an El Camino but similar), had it ALL!!!

The paint job was a candy apple red with glitter and the tailgate had the quintessential (or stereotypical) images you would find on black velvet paintings sold on the streets or back alleys of Tijuana: the Virgin of Guadalupe, a Mayan pyramid, a virgin sacrifice and a lava spewing volcano!!!
Which Wich is a sandwich chain that has been around for a few years now. I've noticed it recently during our previous visits to Bus Stop Gelato which is right next door. Since I had the birthday sandwich offer plus theother coupon from communitymagazines.com, I thought it would be good to use it up, especially since the birthday one expired the next day.

I also wanted to make sure I had something in my stomach before going out to meet up with Tatonka. We were planning to visit a new brewery down South for some sampling and we knew that they didn't serve food there.

At first TC and I were a little confused as to what we should do first. Their menu had ten choices and more choices under each heading.

Turns out that you choose what style you want and pick one of the numbered bags which have choices on them. There are inset holders filled with red sharpie pens that you use to mark up the bags and select what you want to customize your sandwich.

I used the bday one for TC and the Free Lettuce Wich one for me (which required buying a drink and chips, which I gave to TC). So many choices. This "list" on the bag reminded me of the way burgers can be customized at Slater's 50/50.

I was a bit annoyed with myself because I couldn't find my Bus Stop Gelato stamped card. We were due for a free gelato. I must have misplaced it or left it in another purse. It was just as well since we were both full afterwards.

Despite the directions, I still ended up eating mine like a "caveman". Me no can eat properly, haha!

I had a fear of biting into the paper wrapper so I ended up overpeeling it.
There was only one guy making the sandwiches (plus one girl manning the counter) so it seemed to take longer than usual to get our sandwiches. Not to worry, TC and I snacked on the chips while waiting.

Surprisingly, TC wanted the tomato and avocado sandwich and no meat at all. She even ordered the caramelized onions which was news to me. Her sandwich was lightly toasted which she liked because it made the avocada nice and melty.

Here's my lettuce wich "club sandwich" (turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato with added pepperjack cheese, mayo, caramelized onions and mushrooms).

I really enjoyed this even though it got messy towards the end. It was nice not having a bun (or extra carbs) to worry about.
Who else went to Which Wich?
After using Kirk's trusty search bar on his blog, I found that HE himself went to the Hillcrest location back when it opened in early 2009.

I'm not much of a sandwich fan, but I would try this place again in the future. I like their customization options. The folks working here were friendly and patient. I'm sure they're used to first timers who are initially confused or overwhelmed.
About that PB traffic....good Gawd!!!! Never again will I do this!!!! Friday afternoon traffic sucks! And there wasn't even an accident or anything. It took us 45 minutes to travel up Grand Avenue (because I thought it would be faster than Garnet; wrong!) to get to the 5! Anyhow, once I got on the freeway, it was pretty clear sailing and we got home in time to meet up with Tatonka...
Up next...the southermost brewery in the U.S.!

Nice post. Didn't think they would do a lettuce wrap, but now know I can try things there. TC's sandwich sounded delicious...
Hi cathy, yes, the lettuce wrap is a nice option.
Ohh, new birthday place! I'll have to go sign up. TC's sandwich did sound really good - something I just like eating avocado sandwiches, too!
hi mary - i don't know how i found it, but yeah, it was a new one!
Sandwiches... yum. Surprised that I haven't been here yet. Oh yes, going for sure and hope I don't hit craptastic traffic too!
P.S. HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, fellow Aries! :)
