Bday lunch @ Que Huong with MFH

The day after my birthday, I went out with Mi Firme Hina (MFH) for a "belated" birthday lunch...

This meant a return to one of my favorite restaurants, Que Huong over in City Heights. Look for this sign and feel free to park in the Burger King lot (seriously)....

We came early enough so parking wasn't a problem.

Jay (the owner) happened to be working there today and he greeted us with recognition as we walked in.  He always takes the time to chat with his customers and make sure everthing is all right.

MFH was willing to try most of the dishes I suggested except for the frog legs so we went without those that day!  The first dish to arrive was the pork and shrimp jackfruit salad. I guess I haven't had this in awhile here, but I noticed it was now served on the sesame rice cracker. Before, the salad was on the plate with cracked pieces of the rice cracker propped on the sides. I like this new presentation - more crunch factor!

The pork was also quite tasty....pork belly! MFH normally doesn't like pork dishes too much, but she found this one to her liking, especially paired with the shrimp and the sweet, sour, and salty flavors of the sauce.

The fried quail with tamarind sauce was next. It was just as delicious as the other times I've had it.

The last dish was shrimp with ginger and onions. We originally wanted the tamarind crab but he was out of crab that day. Since the quail had tamarind sauce, we chose a difference sauce for this dish. The serving size was pretty generous. Leftovers were enjoyed by Bert and TC the minute I returned home.

Nice and juicy! The head was already torn off by yours truly...

I liked that Jay put a fancy purple swizzle stick in my iced coffee. I must confess that I took it home so that TC could enjoy using it for her smoothies!

Jay also sent us complimentary dessert, which was taro with sweet rice, coconut milk and tapioca. I'm sure there's a Vietnamese name for this, but that's what was in it.

The dessert reminded me of ginataan, a Filipino dessert that uses similar ingredients which can be served either warm or cold. This happened to be cold. Although we were full from lunch, we sampled the dessert; I ended up bringing mine home so that TC and Bert could try it.

Our next stop would be dessert at another venue...
