Julian daytrip

As we know,yesteday was 11/11/11.

Did you turn things up to "11"?

As we all had the day off, Bert made a quick stop to drop off flowers at his father's grave to honor him for Veterans Day. After that, we jumped into the car to do a daytrip up to Julian, a small town up in them thar mountains in San Dee-ah-go (which of course means "whale's vagina")...

Cue music from "Deliverance" here ("Dueling Banjos"). Just kidding. This was the first time TC had ever been here. We were hoping that the weather would cooperate, which it did. No rain until later that evening but we were already gone by then.

The small gold rush mining town of Julian is about an hour and fifteen minutes away from Chula Vista. It's not really a place where we really wanted to go to in the past but curiosity got the better of us. It's Fall and apple pie season is in full swing in Julian. There's one main road, Main Streets where all the shops and restaurants are...

We lucked out on parking on some hillside street (parallel to Main St.). While walking around we saw a horse drawn carriage pass by, which caught TC's attention.

A lot of shops sell pies here. I didn't do research as to which is the "best" so I can't really make any comparisons. This is where we got our one pie, the Julian Cafe and Bakery. We noticed long lines at several cafe/pie places.

At this spot, you can just order your pie at a window which was convenient.

We got the Apple Boysenberry pie with the crumb topping ($12.95):

This is the view from the ordering window. Those pies smelled so good!

A few steps away was a building that had a lot of different shops. TC wanted to go to The Candy Basket...

We saw this old timey Western photography place where people can dress up in Western outfits. The guy in this photo had no shirt underneath the vest. Hmmm, very "Dexy's Midnight Runners"-like, or "Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel". In other words, CLASSY!

I noticed that many of the women's outfits were very, shall we say, WHORISH? Lots of bustier/corset type dresses with one side hitched up to show a lacy garter. If I did one of these photos, I wouldn't want to dress up like a Bordello slut. There was one photo I saw that had two chicks dressed up in leather dusters, jeans with chaps, belts with bullets, and packin' some serious heat (rifles 'n shit). That's more like it for me. I love that butch/badass chick look. Seriously. I'd rather wear that than a damn dress!

I liked the name of this store! This place sold gun replicas and Western accessories (belts, hats, purses, jewelry) along with clothing (lots of ruffly panties in wild patterns)and souvenir items.

The Candy Basket candy store was right next to the awesomely named Pistols and Petticoats...

It was like sugar sensory overload in here. They had all kinds of candies. Mainstream, retro, and hard to find candies. They also had a wide variety of interesting sodas in their cold case.

Some of the lunchboxes for sale...

Bert with the Bruce Lee lunch box. Ha ha, Bert's wearing what I call his "Sam Merlotte" shirt. He just needs giant Western belt buckle...

"Candy candy candy, I still love you so" (Iggy Pop's one and only top 40 hit)

This is what TC bought: mini jawbreakers, "Bottle Pop (a lollipop is under the lid and it is dipped into watermelon flavored powder), and classic Cherry flavored Pop Rocks (we told her to drink it with Pepsi, heh heh).

Sam, I mean Bert bought butterscotch flavored root beer (Dang, That's Good was the soda brand), Dark Chocolate coconut haystacks (homemade by the owner), and Boyer brand butterscotch peanut butter cups. The Mike Wazowski Pez was mine (I loved that character in "Monsters Inc"!). That soda was good by the way. The butterscotch flavor was definitely there. TC called it "butter beer".

PB and Butterscotch are among Bert's favorite flavors of anything, so he was excited to try this at the recommendation of the girl working the counter.

The coating was butterscotch but Bert felt the flavor was really weak. The peanut butter flavor was more pronounced in his opinion.

I had some pie buyer's remorse when I saw this flavor at the Miner's Diner. Mango Apple? That sounds better than Apple Boysenberry! D'oh!

We crossed the street to check out the other side...

Info on Julian...

This place, Mom's Pies had a super long line of people waiting to get seated for lunch. There was a man making pies in the window but he walked away when he saw me I took the photo. You can see the racks of pies cooling...

Well, we got our Apple pie. Now it was time for some Apple cider!

P.S.
For those of you who thought I was being sacrilegious by equating our fine city with a giant whale's twat, rest assured it was merely a reference from "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"...

Way to go San-dee-ahhh-go!

Hahaha, that scene was pretty funny.

Oh, mango pie! That would be cool to try but I also love love the apple boysenberry with crumb topping. It's one of my favorite pies from Julian.

Looks like TC and I have similar tastes in candy. Har har har, Sam Merlotte called. He wants his shirt back.

mango and apple sounds like a good combination to me. that apple/boysenberry pie is pretty much gone now. i ate mostly the edges and topping!

you must like sour stuff like her. and as for bert, i'm not complaining about the shirt - i even bought it for him (but not for the sam merlotte reason)...:)
