Jeremy's on the Hill - Wynola

After our brief exposure to Julian's main drag, we headed out for a relatively late lunch at a nearby establishment, Jeremy's on the Hill. I'd read about it on Kirk's blog (post was from Ed from Yuma, linked at the end of this post) and from the SD Reader.

We didn't want to eat at the tourist trap places on Main Street, so off we went heading west on the 78, just a few miles away from Julian...

Their lunch menu which you can view online here.   It varies according to what's in season. The Le Cordon Bleu trained chef is Jeremy Manley (only 25), a local youth from Julian. I think it's great that a young guy like him chose to come back to his community and start his business there. Everything he makes is sourced from local farms and is seasonal.

View from my part of the table. You can see the main restaurant beyond the curtains. We were seated in a little back room which was cool.

View from Bert's seat. This was a little private room with a curtained section and a fake fireplace! It was quite nice in here. I noticed that the place was nearly devoid of ethnic variety. Besides us, there was one older Asian fellow. Before we left, we saw an African American couple. Other than that, lots of the geriatric/blue hair set. Not hatin', mind you, just sayin'. No worries because people were super nice and the atmosphere was quite cozy.

Bert's overpriced Julian hard apple cider ($12/WTF! It was half that price at a local market!). He should have stuck with a beer. The cider was super clear and looked like bubbly champagne. Although he drank it (I had a few sips), he robably would have been happier with another local beer rather than the hard cider

TC's hot chocolate...

Seafood stew with crab and scallops, vegetables (celery and carrots), fresh herbs and croutons. This was really tasty! The waitress was kind enough to split the serving into three bowls for us. I thought that was really nice of her.

The Cream Cheese Burger with jalapenos, spicy brown mustard, and garlic herb fries. The roll was ciabatta and came dressed with lettuce, tomatoes, red onion slices, and a big pickle spear. I didn't like the roll and ended up deconstructing my burger and not eating the bun, which wasn't toasted.

The apple salad served with mixed greens, chicken, candied pecans, yellow raisins, lemon poppy seed dressing, and a fresh apple. I'd asked for the dressing on the side and they forgot, but it was all right since the dressing wasn't "smelly" or "overpowering" like some dressings can be. I liked the different flavors and textures in this salad. Glad we chose it.

The soup du jour which came with the apple salad was a Thai Carrot Ginger soup with coconut milk. The flavor was bright and fresh with a smooth and creamy texture.

This was the "Gloopy Burger" - served with caramelized onions, slices of applewood smoked bacon and also served with garlic herb fries. TC could only manage half, so we "helped her with the other half. Well, mostly me since I liked her meat patty better than mine (more on that below). Her bacon was also excellent - it was thick slice too!

This was my "half" of the cream cheese jalapeno burger. I thought the meat patty was a bit too dense. There was also a funky flavor in the meat. Bert thought it was blue cheese but the menu description didn't have blue cheese in it so I was kind of freaked out about it so I didn't eat the "tainted" parts. The fries on the other hand were delicious. The chef was not shy in using the garlic here! Loved it.

By the time we left, the place had cleared out. Earlier it was jam packed. We got lucky when we were seated in the private dining room in the back.

Who else went to Jeremy's on the Hill?

Ed (from Yuma), friend of Yoso from Mmm-Yoso"
Jeremy's on the Hill - Dining near Julian (July 2011) - Ed and his wife ate dinner there at least three times and had lovely meals each time. You'll get a better feel of this restaurant after reading his post.

We weren't done yet with our little road trip. On our way back home, we just had to pass by Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel...
