My Parents' Garden revisited...

After lunch at Que Huong we went back home to relax a bit before going out again to visit my parents. Earlier, they'd gone out to the park with the grandkids (my nephews) but left after it got too cold and windy. We wanted to stop by before going out to dinner with Bert's side of the family.

These are some of my mom's Epis (Epidendrum orchids - the same kind seen in the Seabass dish that Bert and I had at Alchemy). She has red and white (not pictured), as well as orange...

and magenta...

This used to have an apple tree in here but my dad got rid of it. He has it ready for camote (sweet potato)  and saluyot (jute).

Here's one of my dad's Ampalaya vines (bittermelon). He has whole makeshift trellis against their back wall. I love it when my mom puts the leaves in Chicken Tinola (ginger soup with chayote and leafy vegetables).

Kamatis (tomato):

Japanese Shisito Pepper - grown from seeds sent to me last year by fellow Filipina blogger Oggi ofthe blog  I Can Do That (Thanks Oggi!). I don't have much of a green thumb, so I gave the seeds to my parents since I knew they could make it grow and then I can pick the peppers too!

Squash vine. I want to say it's Opo (loofah gourd) but I'm not sure...

A squash blossom snaking its way through the base of their guava tree...

Tanglad (lemongrass):

Potted eggplants. Last year my mom used the pots to grow Alugbati (Malabar Nightshade).

Kinchay (Chinese celery), grown near the base of the lone apple tree.

Aloe vera with Swordplant, Bataw vines and Kamote (Sweet Potato):

Bataw blossoms (Hyacinth Bean):

Bataw vines...

The Papaya tree is bearing fruit...

TC int he garden...

Here are photos from my mom's garden taken exactly last year when my bro, sis and I made her Mother's Day Lunch. It's really nice that my parents have an extensive garden. They like to swap vegetables with the neighbor (my godmother) and their friends in thei neighborhood.

More on different types of Filipino vegetables here:
Market Manila's blog (This guy was seen on Bourdain's Philippines episode) and here.

Up next, dinner at Pho Hiep in Eastlake...

Very cool garden! Ah, epis, they are one of the easiest orchids to grow. Some call it poor man's orchid but I love them no matter what they're called. The only orchids I grow now are phals.

hi C - thanks! i like their garden. it's nice to relax back there.

re: epis - we joke (but it's really true) that if you see epis in pots in front of houses (especially down south here), it's gotta be a Filipino's house. sometimes,A-holes steal branches of the orchids because, yet, they are quite easy to grow. that kind of sucks (the stealing).

i have a few dendrobiums and one phal at home. my MIL has a vanda orchid (orange) and it's beautiful. my mom just has epis.

Very cool. I love shisito peppers. Funny, in the middle of editing photos for my recipe for them too.
