Last Day in Canada - St. Lawrence Market, Part 1

Finally, the posts from our last day in Canada. Man, this was nearly ONE YEAR ago! I seriously lag!

Our flight wasn't leaving until earlier this evening so we wanted to make the most of today. Here's the view from our hotel room - we stayed a few blocks away from St. Lawrence Market, which was to be our first destination for that day. As you can see, there was a bit of rain that morning...

Along with more rain as walked to the market...

Like Starbucks in major cities in the U.S. (and in Canada), a city block isn't complete without a Second Cup store.

Northeast view of the St. Lawrence Market building.

(info from wikipedia's entry on St. Lawrence Market):

"St. Lawrence Market is one of two major markets in Toronto (the other being Kensington Market). It is located on the southwest corner of Front and Lower Jarvis Streets. It was established in the early part of the city's history and was once home to Toronto's first permanent city hall and jail house from 1845 to 1899..."

Since it was bright and early, it was pretty dead inside, but that didn't last long. By the time we left around lunch, it was packed in here.

"Over 50 vendors sell fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses on the lower and first level. The building also has The Market Gallery, operated by City of Toronto, on the second floor and a cooking school (market kitchen) on the mezzanine floor..."

Peameal bacon from Brown Brothers Meats. This is the oldest market butcher at St. Lawrence and has been there since 1895! Pea Meal bacon is back bacon that is brined and covered with crushed pea meal. This stuff is pretty salty too.

Slabs of peameal bacon. They also had sliced slabs of the bacon.

Here's another meat stand, Upper Cut Meats:

Check out these meaty bones!

Tarts and pies...

Domenic's Fish Market, formerly owned by Greeks and now owned by Korean.

I don't remember what stand this was from but they had all kinds of meat here, not just lamb and duck but wild game.

like this musk-ox...

and wild boar...

They also had Wild Australian Kangaroo loin, Goat, Camel striploin, Wild Arctic Carabou leg! The upper level had many of the meat, fish, and cheese stands while the lower level had the fresh produce and eateries.

Of course, this being Canada, maple products were sold at many places in the market. This happened to be Jakeman's products. Maple syrup, maple filled candies, maple candy bars, maple chocolates, and so on.

Beatiful fruits and flowers from one of the stands...

Plus different types of rice...

A mural of the market near an empty seating area in the lower level. We would end up having our lunch here...

Up next - lunch from European Delight...

Awwwwwww! I love you guys! I wanted to call you the other night because I was thinking of you and felt like catching up!

I told my mom that you guys said it was the most fun vacation, and she didn't believe me! LOL!

We miss you and can't believe it's been almost a year already! :( BTW, thank you for the parcel you sent! Hubby ate all those treats (spicy lime treats) and LO inhaled the Collon (which I said was for ME!) LOL!

I sent you guys about $40 worth of Coffee Crisp and other goodies! Let's hope Canada Post is nice and decides NOT to go on strike before your package gets to you! :) Let me know if/when you get it! I sent it Xpress Post so it could get to you faster.

Oh, if you find another compact (I know you said there are no more Chococat ones made), if I sent you $$, could you send me one? Any cute Sanrio character will do. I'm so mad that my toddler busted my Chococat!! Grrrr! lol

well, i'm glad that you guys enjoyed the treats that we sent. ha ha, LO ate the collon! I hope that we get the package before we go on vacation. if not, our neighbors will have to check for us because i don't want the chocolates to melt in the sun.
