Picking up the partay food...

We interrupt the current orgy of the South Bay Food Crawl posts.

The following post photos are courtesy of my better half, Bert, who was doing my parents' dirty work last weekend. He was recruited by my mom to pick up shit at several places for nephew #5's 1st birthday party. The first birthday means an @#$% of food and now that my parents are getting on in their years, it's harder for my dad to do all these things and lift heavy stuff. So here we have Lola Happy Bakery on East Plaza Blvd in National City.

There's a funny story about this place but it happened years ago. Maybe ten or more years ago. Bert and my brother went here to pick up a lechon for a party (forgot the occasion) and while they were waiting for their order, this crabby old lola working there was talking shit about them  to another worker in Tagalog. She was saying shit like "Putanginang bata..." ("fucking kids") and "Dumbass kids, they can't speak Tagalog" (said in Tagalog of  course) and other such blatantly fkd up remarks. My brother interrupted her tirade and said, "Excuse me, but we can understand everything that you're saying!"!

His comment shut her up and she grudgingly gave them the lechon while my brother pretty much told them the equivalent of "Fk you very much for your customer service!"! It's kind of an "in-joke" between my brother and my husband that the "Happy" Bakery really wasn't that "Happy" but more like "Bitchy" and "ig'nant". This time, the service wasn't like that. You know, no one disparaging Bert's lack of Tagalog speaking skills. Maybe that old lady is gone now, who knows!

My parents shelled out for this lechon here. I think they paid between $150 -175 for this.

What? No apple in it's mouth? The eyes are gone though!

There was even a stamp on its skin. Who wants that piece?

Knowing my juvenile sense of humor, Bert took a photo of the butt. I just know some Filipino uncle is going to be peeling the skin off this fkr and macking out on it like potato chips.

The next stop was Filipino Desserts Plus - this is right off Plaza and the 805 in that strip mall with the other Filipino places. So descriptive huh. But seriously, you can't miss it. There is also a Filipino Desserts Plus in the new Chula Vista Seafood City food court. Bert picked up a dessert platter here (to be pictured in the next post). Bert liked the wide variety of desserts they had there. They had puto, sapin sapin, pecan tarts, bibingka, pan de ube, pan de sal, and a lot more shit he can't remember the names of.

Heading south to Chula Vista off 3rd and Orange (next to Mercado Internacional 2000) is Chinese City, where my parents ordered a big tray of fried shrimp and something else (forgot). I've never been there but it's most likely a buffet (I just checked yelp and it is). Judging from the "so bad it's good" remarks, it kind of makes me want to NOT go there. Bert said the people who helped him were nice and it was busy inside.

Bert tore off a small piece of the lechon skin...

So long Wilbur!

Next up, food from the party...

I can't wait to see the dessert tray. Maybe I'll finally be able to know the names of the desserts I like. I recently missed out on another chance for lechon. FH's dad had a big birthday and they bought one but I was out of town.
