Our first stop was Scrimshaw...
Where we had a traditional macchiato, a chocolate orange scone (from Bread & Cie; love their baked goods) and their special February drink, the Suga Lips.

Strawberry milk in the cappuccino served in a vintage cup and saucer. Like I've said before, presentation makes a difference. Another difference was the price though. It was $3.75 last year and $4.50 this year. Poo.

I didn't eat those candy hearts. They taste gross.
We liked the little animal crackers though!

One of our favorite coffee shops along the same stretch of road was closing. It's off Winona and Ela Cajon Blvd.

A few days ago, they posted that they would be closing the shop due to financial reasons. This was really sad for us to hear because this was a shop we really enjoyed going to.

Gus and his wife Irma have always made us (and every customer for that matter) feel welcomed. We've seen their shop change over the course of the year, with various art displayed, paintings on the wall (like the one above; a copy from a Russian artist whom they got permission to redo) as well as cool merchandise from local vendors. What I really liked about Black Stag was the sense of connection the owners made with their customers. Sometimes Gus would even come out behind the counter to talk to his customers. There would be times where he would even sit down and join us to chat. How many owners do that?
Thee past few days Bert and I visited hoping to catch them before they closed up for good. On this visit, Irma was there and we had a nice chat with her about their shop and future plans.

And on the visit with Gus - mocha with almond milk and a macchiato (in my own demitasse cup):

Good luck to this awesome couple for their future endeavors. We will miss them and Black Stag Cafe.
