SF Road Trip - Day 5 - The Randall Museum & the Ferry Building

Here's Bert and TC - we felt like regulars taking public transportation to the Randall Museum. I hadn't even known about this place. I happened to be reading the July issue of "Westways" Magazine (for triple AAA members) and it had a one page article about free stuff to see and do in San Francisco! Bingo! Free museum? We're there! See the Yelp reviews here
Nestled high above the hills in the Corona Heightsneighborhood, which is near the Castro District, we took the Muni to the Castro station and walked up a few hills to get there. Here's me and TC trudging up one of them!
Nice views at the top - you can see how densely populated the city is!
The Randall Museum:
There aren't a lot of photos from within the museum since photography is prohibited. I only took shots outside. The museum is geared towards school age kids and teaches them about the importance of nature, the environment, recycling, and animals. There is even a wing of the museum reserved for animals that were injured in the wild and that now live in the museum. While it was nice that the animals were being cared for, it was kind of sad seeing a once majestic hawk with a big old chain connected to it's leg so it couldn't fly away. One of the exhibits that fascinated TC was the Bee exhibit. There was a cross section of a live honeycomb connected to a see through plastic tunnel in which you could see the bees flying in and out! You also saw different stages of making the honey.

Me and another view of the city:
TC building an "earthquake proof" structure from LEGOS. There was an exhibit devoted to the Earthquake and Fires of 1906. This table had several areas where kids (and adults) could build LEGO buildings and they could press a button to make the table shake back and forth. We got up to 20 blocks high with a small base. We tried to build a larger base and got up to 29 stories high before it toppled over. It was a cool hands on exhibit...
View at the top of the Randall Museum:
Castro District - Gay Mecca!
At the MUNI Station in the Castro - you can see rainbow flags everywhere here.
Plaque honoring Harvey Milkat the Castro MUNI station...Milk was most recently portrayed on film by one of my favorite actors, Sean Penn. Wow, from perpetually stoned surfer Jeff Spicoli from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" to winning Oscars for playing ex con Jimmy Markum in "Mystic River" as well as slain gay activist, Harvey Milk in "Milk"!
Poster in the MUNI station at the Castro...OMG! Look at those lineups! Depeche Mode!!! Snoop Dogg too! And No Doubt! Wow, Gwen Stefani is a goddess and a MILF and she has a hot musician husband (Gavin Rossdale, former frontman for Bush)!
Here we are again at the San Francisco Ferry Building. When we arrived a few days ago, we ate a late lunch at the Vietnamese fusion place, Slanted Door. We just wanted regular food this time. I also wanted to check out some of the food stalls, especially the one that sold the toffee covered pretzels.
Mmm...Boccalone- tasty salted pig parts sounds good to me!
The Ferry building was so deserted after lunch time, plus it was a weekday. It was so much nicer having more "elbow" room and perusing the stalls instead of feeling claustrophobic with tons of people around.
This is where we ended up having our lunch - The San Francisco Fish Compnay. My pictures came out so shitty that I didn't bother posting them. TC and I shared a trio of fish tacos while Bert had a seabass sandwich. I wanted to eat light because I knew that we were going to be having a big dinner. We planned to meet a friend of mine at this Filipino place she recommended, Sinugba, which is located in Daly City.
At Boriana's Corner, we bought a couple of the Bombolonis which are basically Italian donuts with filling - I bought the Ciocolatta and the "alla crema" which is Custard. Delicious!!!! Plus this Tuscan company had imported foodstuffs from...Montepulciano! Normally, I would not give a shit, but hello, have you seen the video of RPattz shirtless at the bottom of my blog (pause to scroll down and drool)? The "New Moon)" Bella & Edward reunion scene was filmed in Montepulciano, which stood in for the Italian city of Volterra!
Scharffen Berger Chocolates - This is quality stuff and it's pretty pricey...
After lunch, we had so much time on our hands so we decided to check out my friend's bookstore...
