Flecks of spit

After church this past Sunday, we were on our way out. An old Lolo, dashingly dressed in a cream suit, dark shirt, white tie and white shoes stopped us and greeted us in Tagalog, "Magandang Umaga" ("Good morning"), so we said the same to him and expected to be on our way. But, he started to talk to us and since we were being polite, waited for him to finish talking. Oh man, little did we know we would hear a comical rant and rave that was half in English and half in Tagalog. At the same time, the man was holding a paper cup filled with coffee and in his other hand, a pastry. As he spoke to us, visible flecks of donutty spit would spew out sporadically. He also had some rank breath. I was the lucky one standing closest to him. And yes, I was within striking distance. I tried moving back imperceptibly, but this man seemed to have no boundaries whatsoever. Bert laughed about it in the car later, tellng me that he saw me visibly cringe as the flecks of donut would come out. Gross!

What was also funny was the stuff he was saying. After the "greeting", he told us he was 80 years old and being divorced in California. At least that what we thought he said. He also said he retired from the "damn Navy" and that he had to put up with the "pendejos" ("stupid" in Spanish) and the "stupidos" (hey, isn't that redundant). Uhh, if I were him, I wouldn't put down the Navy since that's probably what brought him here to America.

Yeah, he was half cussing in English and Tagalog with our young daughter next to us. Before he mercifully "let us go", he said, "Watch out for your daughter!". When we asked why, he said, "Because of the black market and kidnapping". Niiiice. Thanks for the advice dude.

Note to self, don't go to the 8:30 mass again.

LOL!!! OMG! I couldn't stop laughing while reading this post! I could actually visualize the whole scenario unfolding! Too funny!

I also got 'trapped' into a conversation with an old Filipino man on the bus once. I think they seek out the young Filipinos and swoop in on their prey :) I was raised to be respectful of our elders, so I engaged in conversation with the man. It was the funniest thing ever. He also spoke in half Tagalog, half English. The conversation ended with him hugging me and telling me I was now his family in Canada. LOL! Ummm...okay.

P.S. I just about cried laughing at the Lolo's closing remarks! Watch out for your daughter because of the black market and kidnapping!!

Thanks for the morning laugh :) Love your posts!!!
