Lunches with La Ley : Supannee, Pho Convoy, + Pho Convoy revisit with Bert

Here are some recent lunches with my co-worker/friend La Ley...

She hadn't tried Supannee before and was willing to give it a shot...

We had attended an Ivy League college workshop in the Mission Valley area and made the trip out to Point Loma for lunch. La Ley really enjoyed their lemongrass ginger iced tea. We both did. It was a pretty hot day that morning and this drink really hit the spot.

Everything here was new to La Ley who pretty much let me order.  This was their miang kam, which I've had before but with spinach leaves as the filling delivery system. This time, the leaves were thicker and a bit more bitter; they turned out to be Chinese cabbage leaves.  Also, instead of dried shrimip, they had grilled shrimp.    There were sweet dried coconut flakes, peanuts, limes, the shrimp, and finely chopped red onion and ginger plus a few pieces of a super hot chili. The tamarind sauce in the middle was thick and sweet.

The other dish we tried was the Nam Khao Tod, fried rice balls with Thai sausage. For some reason, I was thinking of the Lao style Nam Khao which has fermented pork sausage. I must have had a brain far. The dish didn't have as much rice. There was a hell of a lot of sausage, which was the same as our next dish, so it seemed too redundant to me. I was bummed by this.

Here is that Thai Sausage, which looked a lot different from previous preparations in the past. Instead of plump balls, they are now a little bit bigger and pre-cut. The shape looks like it was a longer than a round ball. The color was also not as reddish. The sausages didn't quite taste the same as I remembered but were still quite good.

My friend really enjoyed everything we had here. There were a lot of leftovers which she took home to enjoy later (hopefully sharing it with her husband).

On another occasion, we went to Pho Convoy for lunch...

My Vans are the red suede; here are the yellow suede/canvas skater shoes.

The specials board at Pho Convoy:

We shared the Banh Hoi with grilled shrimp. It was kind of pricey here after I compared prices at the VN restaurants in City Heights. This was $13.95.

I returned later that evening with Bert. We ordered that shrimp special - wild caught shrimp have a different flavor. They are also bigger and cost more, but worth it. The vegetables and rice served with this were not that great, but the shrimp was pretty meaty. We didn't even finish it all because we wanted TC to try it later.

Wanting to have this again soon...
