Downtown Chula Vista Pub Crawl - Stops 4 & 5: 3 Punk Ales + Third Ave Alehouse

This was a place that Bert had visited recently...

and I was curious about 3 Punk Ales, one of the newer breweries here...

It's near Bar Sin Nombre (on the corner of Third and Davidson), which of course, has no signage (the name itself means, "Bar with no name"). We'll have to try that place next time. It was just breweries this late afternoon. Loved the names of their beers, going with the music theme.

The wall was covered in a DIYesque mural consisting of old band flyers and a mishmash of older images and paint splats. Below were the vats (not shown).

Cheers!

The baby 4 oz  above was mine - This Charming Stout oatmeal stout (the title is a nod to "This Charming Man" by The Smiths). The bartender was trying to get me to upgrade to the 8 oz, ha ha.

Keeping with his preferences, Bert got a dark beer - this was From Ashes Rise, which was a smoked schwarzbier. I liked this as well, but could only manage a few sips.

I could barely finish this, but I did like it.

Thane's choice was of course, the hoppiest one, Alpha Needle. This was bitter AF! Ugh! How could anyone down this?

Ha ha!

Well, our last stop of the early evening was the Third Ave Alehouse. It's on the south side of F and Third.

They had a lot of choices here...plus food.

I was disappointed by the cheeseboard. There were only a few slivers of cheese (manchego and another type I didn't recognize plus horrible goat), a few slices of a thick cracker with dried fruits, a few almonds plus one chocolate covered one (that was random), and pistachios in the shell. NOT WORTH $10. WTF. That'll learn us.

The three drinks were: Thane's Alpine Nelson (lower left), Bert's Societe Debutate (upper left) and my Black Market Brewing Passionfruit (lower right). I was supposed to have a 4 oz but the lady poured me an 8 oz and charged us for the 4 which was nice of her.

Mine was pretty fruity but at this point, and keep in mind, I don't drink a lot, I was getting a bit tired and sleepy. I normally don't drink, especially on a Sunday. So a few sips were all I could manage as well.  I ended up driving home since Bert had 4 full glasses of some hard ass beer.

Yeah...this could've been better. More shit on the cheese board please to give us our money's worth.

What made everything better were the tacos (overpriced though). According to Thane, there are different food vendors on different days. This happened to be a birria taco vendor (didn't catch the name of their business). These were gone in sixy seconds.

View from the back patio. This is the apartment tower for senior citizens.

Hallway near the bathrooms...

Sculpture along Third Ave.  Gloomy clouds rolled in..

We had to bid farewell to Thane. I ended up driving him back to the hospital where his father was so he wouldn't have to walk back on his own. Bert had four beers so driving was out of the question for him. Thane's next visit will be sometime in November, so we may do another pub crawl elsewhere.

Of the four places we visited, I liked the Cream Ale from Groundswell as well as my oatmeal stout from 3 Punk Ales. I liked the chill atmosphere of Groundswell; it was way too loud at Chula Vista Brewery (since the TV's were on showing football games). I liked the all out theme at 3 Punks. The quietest place was the alehouse. There were some friendly folks there, some describing their dislike of the current Chargers, ha ha.

We're going to need to do Novo Brazil in Eastlake when Thane comes back down.
