A few nights ago, he searched on yelp and found this place...Empa Mundo, an Argentinian place that speciaizes in empanadas.

Interior....(ooh, love the 70's wall paneling)

The refrigerator of drinks:

That's Raul (Argentine) and his wife (Indonesian). Nice guy, very friendly. He's been to many countries and has even worked for a Philippine company (affiliated with Nabisco crackers). I met two friends of his that drive 30 min south (from Plano) just for his empanadas.

Bert ordered three empanadas, all of which were individually wrapped, along with an alfajor cookie. He told me that the empanadas were very filling.

This, apparently, is a very good representation of a classic Argentine empanada. I spoke with some patrons that drove 30 minutes just for these.

This was my second favorite. Raul said he cut the brisket so that you could still see the muscle fiblers, and diced the potatoes. He said that other places with the same brisket empanada look more like ground beef and mushy potatoes.

I liked this one the best of the three. The tuna had a spiciness to it that didn't require any chimichurri sauce.

Alfajor

A bit dry and crumbly, but tasty...
Well, didja like that people? If you did, there's more posts coming up as Bert uses his work's lunch and dinner stipend for our bloggy entertainment.
Coming up, the largest equestrian sculptures in the world, the Mustangs of Las Colinas! Plus more food posts throughout this week.

I love the empanada mascot for the restaurant.
hi darlene - yes, it so cute! nicer looking than the one in canada "Jumbo Empanadas" (a Chilean place in Kensington Market).
Hi Bert!! Your pics and comments are great! I loved the first few pics that seemed to have been taken using the 80's diamond cropping technique.. ;) Did CC give you that pointer? hehe. The empanadas look great. The way they were packaged and labeled. Nerd-Alert.. I like this place.
The problem with reading food blog posts while at work is that everything makes you hungry. Gah! I almost got some empanadas at the Farmer's Market in Mira Mesa last night... but I got lumpia instead. Empanadas next time!
Hey Dennis. Yep, CC gave me that picture cropping pointer. Straight on cropping is so boring.
One more story... The place is pretty new (less than a year old) but it seems to have been getting pretty popular. Raul said that a local food group came over a few Sundays ago. They contacted the place and Raul was agreed to have them over. The group has about 40 members but he told them he's only got seating for 27 people. They said it'd be ok, they'll manage. So he got their orders beforehand to have the empanadas ready. However, word got out and 10 or so more people showed up! So the place was jammed packed that day.
Anyhow, if you find yourself in Irving, TX, check this place out!
hi mary - i love reading food blogs and even better, finding hidden gems either from other blogs or thru first hand experience. sometimes we never know what's out there or we drive by a place all the time without ever trying it...
dennis - we learned the diamond cropping thing from our friend, thane (as in thane of the universe) - this is the thane we visited last year in s.f. (our best man)
No one else thinks it's cool that it's an Argentinian/Indonesian couple?
