This weekend, we went to the Ethnic Food Fair at Balboa Park. This event is hosted by the International Cottages and is usually during the last weekend of May. We'd gone many times in previous years, even before TC was born. It's always been fun trying out new cuisines...Here's the view crossing the Prado into Balboa Park. That's the California Tower from the Museum of Man. This tower was featured in the opening sequence of Orson Welles' classic movie, "Citizen Kane" and represented "Xanadu", the Hearst Castlesque residence in the movie.
We got there pretty early which was about 9:45 a.m. The event didn't really kick off until 10 am and even then, most of the booths were still setting up and getting ready. We already had our game plan in mind...
House of Turkey menu...
Next to House of Turkey was Baklava King! I had my eye on their boreks spinach and cheese pies).
House of Palestine
House of Lebanon wasn't quite ready yet.
Then you had the Latin American booths, like House of Columbia, Peru, Mexico, and in this case, House of Panama...
We could smell the sausages grilling...
House of Argentina menu...
House of Scotland - they used to sell haggis a while back but no one really bought it so they started selling meat pies instead...
Although I'm sure their food was good, we passed on House of China because we can get this food anytime...
Here's the House of Ukraine - I'm not sure what they were selling though...
House of Finland menu...
House of Hungary menu - my biggest regret that day was not having a taste of the Langos (fried bread), which I read about the next day. The bread is about the size of a plate, is deep fried and covered with sour cream and other toppings! OMG! I'll have to try that next year. Boo.
lebanon menu
This is my favorite - the House of Puerto Rico menu! We go here every year! Their pastelillos are the best things ever! It's like an empanada and totally kicks ass on the versions put out by House of Columbia and Argentina. You'll see in my next post...
House of Ireland menu featuring bangers (sausage) and champ (potato and cabbage dish). Their secret ingredient was Guinness in the stew.
House of the Philippines - we uh, skipped on this booth too. We can get this anytime and I can make that stuff too! Several people near us were excited about their "pancit" (which they pronounced as "pan-sit" as in frying 'pan'; it should be 'pahncit') and "lumpia".
House of India...
House of Indian menu. I noticed there were a lot of pricey combo menus. In our case, we chose not to get the combos and grazed on individual items here and there...
House of Spain was selling paella for $6 a plate...they had three huuuuge paelleras in the back.
In addition to great food, there was also various kinds of entertainment. TC and I happened to catch these dancers performing a dance with wooden clogs. I assume they were representing the Netherlands? The music sounded like "Popeye" the sailor man, sea chanty type music.
There were also Mexican folk dancers with girls twirling their beautiful colorful skirts...
Coming up - the FOOD!

I can't believe I missed this again!
Next year, you have to try the langos, it's the best thing ever! Some Hungarian friends made it for me once, and all I can say is that I wish I was Hungarian.
Dang I missed out!! There's no way I could've tasted everything I wanted but I sure would've tried.. :)
Hi Vicki and Dennis
Believe it or not, we tried about 20 different things that day. And there were only 3 of us!!! Last year we went with friends and we were able to sample more stuff, except they weren't as adventurous as us. :(
Yes, the LANGOS was a hit, i heard. I tried buying it, but it wasn't ready yet. By the time I remembered, we were already full. I'll have to wait until next year, or befriend someone that is Hungarian!!!!
Try to go next year - it's always the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.
my boss told me about this after it happened...so bummed. next year for sure i guess. was there a house of korea by any chance?
hi dd - actually there isn't a house of korea. if there was, i'd be buying their food!!! but then again, i can go to convoy for that! :)
