*Note - I just did a 4 post marathon...just scroll down after this post...anyways, am gearing up for the end of the school year. Lots of activities happening and outings...Coming soon, my post on Balboa Park's Ethnic Food Fair which we attended on the 24th)
My oldest nephew turned twelve last weekend and of course, this occasion was marked by a party in the park with lots of good ass Filipino food. Behold, my sister's Pancit Palabok.
OMFG, Lechon!!!! $8.50 a lb from Lola's Grill on Telegraph. I had to tear myself apart from this tray because I was drawn to the crispy pig skin with the fat and meat underneath. The skin was so very nice and crispy, like a potato chip, but with fat! My mouth is watering just looking at this photo!
The lumpia was looking kind of sparse. It's the food that most people, especially the non Filipinos are familiar with. I didn't see any non Filipinos dip into the fried mini fish or my mom's pinakbet though. They're missing out man.
Fried dilis (tiny little fish). Nice and crunchy snacks.
My parents' bbq beef skewers:
My mom's pinakbet. In an attempt to make it "healthy" (or less salty), she didn't put any bagoon alamang in it (salted and fermented shrimp fry). This is one of my favorite dishes which I consider comfort food. I love bittermelon, eggplant, sitao (long beans), lima beans, and okra! I haven't made this in a while. Next time, I've got to make it with Lechon Kawali! My mom used ham here.
And yes, the ubiquitous Salt & Pepper Wings with lots of fried garlic!
There was also another kind of pancit. This one had two types of noodles. The thicker yellow noodle is "canton" (wheat based), while the thinner and more clear glasslike noodle is bihon (bean threads). I think my sis ordered this. Bert's mom makes her pancit this way too, with two types of noodles.
My nephew's dad was working the grill with some Brats and the beef skewers which my mom marinated in lemon juice, teriyaki and pepper. There was also another tray of hotdogs (not pictured since they're not too exciting to me).
Brats:
My lemon cheese cake bars:
Someone also made fresh salsa with chips. The cake was from Costco - nothing spectacular enough to take a photo for, but it was a lot of fun. The food was what did me in. I wanted to eat healthy this weekend, but the sight of that Lechon was too much. I know too much pork isn't really good for me, but...

Must. Have. Again.

You gotta have those salt and pepper chicken wings! Speaking of healthy, the mom of a friend of mine's thinks you can make the S&P chicken more healthy...."you scrape of the garlic and scallions". ;o)
hi kirk- that's right brah - you gotta have them wingz!
yeah, scrape off the garlic and scallions off of remaining FRIED SKIN. that'll help! ha ha.
Filipino BBQ is THE BEST!!! Gah...you are making me hungry!
BTW, we seem to have a back and forth thing going on re: comics on my latest post. You'll see how truly dorky I was/am when you see which comic series I was addicted to as a kid.
Oh, and I CANNOT watch that YouTube vid of Bella and Edward! Makes me burn with envy! Sooo jealous! LOL! I know, I know. It's only fiction. Gah...nerd alert. I know.
LECHON! Mr. Tall and I watched Anthony Bourdain's No Reservation when he was in the Philippines so we've been wanting to try lechon. Where can you find that in San Diego?
hi c - we're geeks and should be proud of it!
hi lmc - for lechon, you can get that any place in national city. look at kirk's mmm-yoso blog for recommendations since he eats that more often than i do. my sis ordered hers from lola's grill in chula vista (near vons on telegraph), but there are places that specialize in it in national city. you can also get it already made in seafood city. they sell food there - lechon kawali!!!! that stuff is good! or even sisig, which is chopped up lechon kawali with peppers, lemon, vinegar, etc.you can get that at conching's or tita's kitchenette in n.c.
i thought the bourdain episode in the philippines was good PR for our cuisine, as opposed to andrew zimmern's take (bizarre foods guy). i was so happy that bourdain proclaimed filipino lechon the best he's ever had. that's saying a lot coming from him. i wasn't too thrilled about his host, agusto. he was all talk and no action.
Thank you so much for the tips! We looked up Conching and Tita's Kitchenette on Yelp, and we'll definitely be trying one of these places out next weekend. Now we've just got to learn more about Filipino dishes so we know what to order when we get there!
hi lmc - next time u want to go out to eat filipino food, let me know. email me at
