Lucky for me, I remember details and all. During this time span, a Little Big Burger opened in Mission Valley...
The San Diego location opened in April 2018 and according to the latest (and last) yelp reviews, lasted until March 9 of this year. Well, now. Not even a year.
We first saw this Portland based chain while in the Alberta district in Portland in 2012. This particula location was in the Pearl District. We saw it while trying to decide where to eat and chose this place since it was next door to a newly opened New Orleans beignet place (also in this post).
Their menu is simple- burgers with or without cheese and fries. They also had a veggie burger (which is what TC had). I had the plain, Bert had the cheese. We all shared the fries, which were decent. Better than In 'n Out but not as good as McD's. Yes, I said it.
The burgers here are small and cute and according to Bert, NOT FILLING. Ha ha. For sure. If you have a big appetite, one of these will not cut it for you. The meat was good but I didn't like that the lettuce was shredded this way. Made for messy eating. Leaves would have been better.
This was a good enough lunch to tide us over 'til dinner.
Next door to the burger place was the newly opened (at the time of visit) NOLA Doughnuts.
The owner was from Louisiana and offered fresh made to order beignets, chicory coffee and a croissant/doughnut hybrid called a "LA'ssant" (kind of like the cronut). We didn't get any of those but kept it simple with the beignets (three to an order and fried fresh to order).
Our chicory coffee was bold and smooth.
We also ordered a doughnut bite (basically the 'hole'; gosh that sounds gross).
The beignets were bigger than I expected. Bert said they were about the same size as the one's he had in New Orleans years ago. The powdered sugar was there in full force and made for messy eating. The dough was nicely fried and melt in your mouth. These did not last long, but I was sugared out afterwards. The doughnut bite wasn't anything special.
