we made the short trek to a fairly new bakery...

I'm all for trying new places especially during our road trips, so...
here we were. And yes, there was that ubiquitous hipster font on the welcome sign. We would see it again later during our trip at other places.

It's pretty sparse in here. The menu is also concise which is good. I liked the glass partitions where you could see all of the action in the kitchen. The downside, there's no place to sit here or outside. You basically choose your pastries and GTFO. They have various filled malasadas (sadly, no ube that morning of our visit), ensaymadas and Levain style cookies along with housemade granola.

One box was for us and the other for my friend who we would later meet for lunch that day.

Later that afternoon in San Pedro...our baked goods.

Chocolate peanut butter cookie (this was $4 dammit; Bert really wanted it), a vanilla bean custard filled malasada (TC's choice) and an Ensaymada (my choice).

Of the three items, I liked the cookie the best. It was heavy and chock full of chips. The flavor was also rich and filling. Worth $4? I wouldn't pay it again but once was enough. The ensaymada was on the dry side. I didn't like it at all. The malasada was great but I would have preferred a different filling flavor. Vanilla is kind of boring for me. I liked that all of the pastries held up over the course of that day; we enjoyed them after dinner and they still tasted fresh.
Here' a short video of Paderia's before they had their grand opening back in April:
I like that chick's purple nail polish! Very ube worthy!

Sadly, one of the few places in San Diego that offered malasadas with unique fillings, Papa's Donuts, has closed. The bakeries in San Diego are not as diverse as the ones in the OC or LA, but hopefully, they'll get by offering more unique items. I like that they offered Filipino flavors and pastry hybrids here (ensaymadas).
