which provided shade for these benches at the bus stop on the PCH...
Not too far away from the shopping center was the Huntington Beach Pier. Every major beach city in Southern California has a pier and since we were here, well...

At 1850 feet in length, the Huntington Beach pier is one of the longest in the West Coast (the longest pier distinction goes to the one in Oceanside). It was built in 1904 and has been rebuilt several times in the past. The pier rises 100 feet above the ocean. On the other side of the street is the Main St. shopping district. This post focuses just on the pier.

Huntington Beach is also known as "Surf City USA"...

\The 4th of July banners were still up. The stretch of beach was pretty wide. The sand looked very clearn and there were already folks out there playing volleyball, surfing, swimming, and enjoying the sun.

At the foot of the pier next to a gift shop was one of those creepy talking fortune tellers, Zoltar or whatever it's called. The shop sold souvenirs as well as all kind of kite (I liked the one shaped like the Millenium Falcon, ha hah).

At the end of the pier was Ruby's Diner. The pier didn't seem as long as the one in OB. There wasn't much going on to be honest. We did see a few fishermen.

Lovely in either direction!

Views from the ends of the pier:

The water wasn't as crowded with surfers here as they are in OB and IB.

Yes! Millenium Falcon!

Walking the pier was peaceful though since it wasn't quite crowded at this point.
It was cool visiting a pier that is considered a historic structure and landmark.

It was already getting pretty warm and we were also hungry for lunch. We would be meeting up with a historian friend of mine whom we hadn't seen in three years....
